Description
Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse - PCU
Location: Winston Salem, North Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Summary
Seeking a Registered Nurse for a Progressive Care Unit (PCU) with a mixed acuity patient population including PCU and Med-Surg/Telemetry patients. The unit cares for patients with COPD, pneumonia, respiratory distress, COVID-19, flu, pulmonary embolisms, and other complex conditions requiring telemetry monitoring and respiratory support.
Work Schedule
- 12-hour night shifts
- Approximately 36 hours per week
- Weekend requirement: 4 weekend shifts in 6 weeks (may require more based on staffing needs)
- Float requirement: Must float to like units
- Block scheduling may be accommodated based on unit needs
Patient Population & Unit Details
- 48-bed unit with mixed acuity
- Patient conditions include COPD exacerbations, pneumonia, acute respiratory failure, chest tubes, CPAP/BiPAP, and chronic trach/vent patients
- Ventilator patients limited to one per nurse
- CNA ratio approximately 9-10:1
- High acuity with resources including Admission/Discharge nurse, Assistant Nurse Manager, Vascular Access Team, Respiratory Therapists, Code Team, and Behavioral Health Team
Required Skills & Certifications
- Minimum 2 years of nursing experience
- IV start, ventilator care, telemetry, CPAP/BiPAP management
- Dysrhythmia interpretation and management
- Certifications: ACLS, BLS
- Must pass EKG competency testing prior to start
- Unit orientation: 24 hours
- Scrubs: White or navy blue (not provided)
Preferred Certifications
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
Patient Care Notes
- Unit currently cares for COVID-19 positive patients
- High acuity med-surg environment with team leadership and support staff available
Required Qualifications
- Valid RN license in North Carolina
- Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
- Minimum 2 years of experience in Progressive Care Unit (PCU) or Med-Surg Telemetry (MS/Tele), with PCU experience within the last year
- Ventilator experience
- Telemetry experience
- CPAP/BiPAP experience
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) certification issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
- BLS (Basic Life Support) certification issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
- Orientation Safety Manual Acknowledgement
- Tech Cert Verification - National
- Ability to float to similar units
- Must pass dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam within 72 hours of start
- Ability to work 12-hour night shifts and meet weekend requirements
Additional Requirements
- Background check within 6 months of start
- Drug screening within 6 months of start
- Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 1 year of start (or documentation of past positive TB with appropriate follow-up)
- Required immunizations and titers including Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella, and seasonal flu vaccination or approved exemption
- Completion of facility-specific orientation and compliance training
- Photo ID for badge creation required prior to start
- Completion of medication safety training and other mandatory education modules
Notes
- First-time travelers are accepted for this assignment
- No Return to Office (RTO) after booking allowed; call-offs or additional RTO may result in cancellation
- High acuity and patient ratios require strong clinical skills and ability to work independently with team support
