Job Opportunity: Surgical Tech – Open Heart Surgery

Location: Peoria, Illinois
Contract Length: 13 weeks (approximately 3 months)
Department: Open Heart Surgery / Cardiovascular Operating Room (CVOR)

Job Description

• Work primarily in the CVOR with 2-3 operating rooms running daily.
• Average 1-3 complex open heart surgery cases per day.
• Cases include CABG, valve repairs/replacements, aortic dissections, ECMO, VAD implants, carotid endarterectomy, peripheral vascular bypasses, amputations, trauma cases, thoracic surgeries, tracheostomy, and congenital pediatric open heart surgeries (pediatric experience preferred but not mandatory).
• The facility is accredited to start heart transplants (none completed yet).
• Surgical techs work alongside nurses; nurses may scrub but RN travelers are not required to scrub.
• Shifts are four 10-hour shifts (6:30 AM – 5:00 PM), Monday through Friday.
• On-call required for nights (5:00 PM – 6:30 AM), weekends (Friday 5:00 PM – Monday 6:30 AM), and holidays (full 24 hours).
• Typical call schedule: 1-2 weekends per month, 2 nights per week, holidays as applicable.
• Floating within the surgery department (general, ortho, neuro, peds, SPD) may be required during low census.
• Orientation includes 1 day of mandatory education and 2-5 days CVOR-specific orientation.
• Surgical scrubs and locker room provided; personal lock required.

Required Qualifications

• Must have completed a surgical technologist program (not technician).
• Minimum 2 years of primary scrubbing experience in complex open heart procedures.
• BLS certification required.
• Negative drug screen required (drug-free campus).
• Active Illinois license or proof that application process has been initiated.
• Ability to scrub and assist in complex cardiothoracic and vascular surgeries.
• Expected to assist with circulating the room when not scrubbed in.
• Precepting new staff is part of the role.

Additional Information

• Primary charge nurse works Monday-Friday 6:30 AM – 3:00 PM, does not take call.
• House supervisor available 24/7.
• EMR system used: Epic.
• Local placements accepted within a 50-mile radius.
• Non-billable orientation hours: 12 hours.
• Call off policy allows 12 hours off every 13 weeks without penalty.
