Description
Registered Nurse - Medical Surgical
Location: Indianapolis, Indiana
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Overview
- Must be flexible with weekend requirements; expected to work 50% of weekends during the contract.
- Teaching facility environment; travel nurses may be required to precept or have students shadow them.
- Locals are not accepted for this position.
- Charge nurse responsibilities may be required depending on operational needs, with training provided.
- Floating to different levels of care (Med-Surg, PCU, ICU) may be expected with resources provided.
- Staffing ratios typically 1:5-6.
- Patient population includes trauma cases (GSW, blunt trauma, stab wounds, MVC), orthopedic injuries, ostomies, hernia repairs, skin flaps, significant wounds, and surgical drains.
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Indiana
- Minimum 2 years of Medical-Surgical nursing experience, with experience within the last year
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification issued by the American Heart Association
- Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification
- Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) certification
- National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
- Trauma nursing experience
Prior Travel Experience
- First-time travelers accepted.
- No explicit prior travel experience required.
Compliance & Documentation Requirements
- Valid Driver’s License or Passport (clear copy).
- Background checks including criminal, sex offender, education verification, and others required within specified timeframes.
- Physical exam within 12 months of start date.
- Fit mask test within 12 months of start date (specific respirators approved).
- Immunizations and titers required:
- Rubeola (Measles) – positive titer or 2 vaccines required, no declinations accepted.
- Mumps – positive titer or 2 vaccines required, no declinations accepted.
- Rubella – positive titer or 2 vaccines required, no declinations accepted.
- Varicella – positive titer or 2 vaccines required, no declinations accepted.
- Hepatitis B series, titer, or signed declination required.
- Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap preferred but not required.
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year of start date.
- Drug screening (10 panel) within 12 months of start date.
- Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required during flu season (9/30 - 3/31). Declinations not accepted.
- Color blind exam required (Ishihara or equivalent).
Additional Notes
- Call-in shift policies require making up missed shifts or adding them to the end of the contract depending on FTE status.
- Indiana RNs will not be allowed to work at the facility after 11/30/24 except for Perioperative/OR, Allied, and Ambulatory RN travelers.
- Must complete facility-specific orientation packets and compliance checklists prior to start.
- Must provide at least 2 professional references from recent employment with appropriate supervisory titles.
- Employment application must be current and explain any employment gaps over 30 days.
- Skills checklist must be completed annually and within 12 months of start date.
