Description

Registered Nurse – Neuro ICU

Location: Peoria, Illinois
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Unit Overview

  • Department: Neuro ICU
  • Unit Size: 18 beds
  • Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: 1:2
  • Shift Length: 12 hours
  • Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
  • Holiday Requirement: Rotating every other holiday
  • Orientation: 20 hours (one 8-hour shift and one 12-hour shift)
  • Floating: Travelers float first; may float to intermediate (1:3 ratio) and general floors (1:4 ratio)

Patient Population & Care

  • Common Diagnoses: Ventriculostomy patients, strokes (with/without tPA), post-craniectomy care
  • Typical Procedures/Skills: Ventriculostomy care, NIH Stroke Scale certification, ventilator management, arterial and central lines, acute stroke management, tPA administration
  • Drip Management: RNs are required to titrate drips as ordered by physicians; variety of drips used

Staffing & Support

  • Charge Nurse: Present on each shift; may take patient assignments if staffing is limited
  • House Supervisor: Available 24/7
  • Patient Care Techs/Nurse Aides: Yes, ratio approximately 9:1
  • Respiratory Therapy Equipment: RNs troubleshoot vents, CPAP, BiPAP, high flow devices
  • Telemetry: Tele/Monitor techs staffed every shift; nurses read and interpret telemetry strips (Phillips monitors)

Required Certifications & Licenses

  • Active Illinois RN license (or application in process)
  • BLS (AHA)
  • ACLS

Experience & Skills

  • Required Specialty Experience: Neuro ICU nursing skills including ventilator management, stroke care, and line management
  • Must be able to titrate drips and manage complex neuro ICU patients
  • Prior travel experience: Not specified (assumed not required)

Additional Information

  • Drug-Free workplace: Negative drug screen required
  • Local placements accepted within 50-mile radius
  • Non-billable orientation hours: 12 hours
  • Call or standby: Not applicable

This position is ideal for experienced Neuro ICU RNs comfortable with high-acuity neurological patients and complex critical care nursing.
