Job Opportunity: Surgical Assistant - General/Neuro Day Shift
Position Details
- Employment Type: Contractor
- Contract Length: 13 weeks
- Shift: Day shift (variable start times between 5:30 AM - 7:00 AM)
- On Call: Yes
- 30-minute response time
- 8-week call schedule (may vary)
- General/Neuro: AM/PM shifts, 10 end-of-shift call slots, 1-2 weekend calls depending on specialty
- Orthopedic: 1 weekday call per week until 7:00 AM, 1 call weekend every 5 weeks (depending on ortho assists)
- Holiday Schedule: Option to work 4 ten-hour shifts during holiday weeks or take holiday unpaid
- Orientation: 1 to 1.5 weeks, depending on team and shift
- Floating:
- Cross-trained to General Main OR specialty and Urology Center
- No floating to other hospitals/sites
Patient Population & Procedures
- Patient Types:
- Neurology/ENT: Spine surgeries (laminectomies, ALIFs, fusions, dissections), cranial surgeries (tumors, VP shunts, subdural, EVDs), ENT surgeries (neck dissections with flaps, sinus surgeries, tonsils, tympanoplasty)
- Orthopedic: Fractures, anterior/posterior hips, total knees, ortho spine procedures, hand, bone/soft tissue sarcomas, foot/ankle, total shoulders, arthroscopy (shoulder, knee, ankle, wrist)
- General Surgery: Breast, plastic, vascular, laparoscopic, oncology, genitourinary, gynecology, robotic surgeries (DaVinci XI) — robotic cases require strong background and longer contract commitment
- Equipment & Technology:
- Navigation systems: Medtronic (cranial/spine), Medtronic Stealth (ENT), Stryker, Synaptive
- Positioning: Hana Table, Jackson Table, Beach Chair, Stulberg hip, spider arm, hip grip, Trimano, Arthrex shoulder traction, peg board, arm boards, Acufex leg holder
- Specialty Equipment: Velys robot
- EMR: EPIC
- IV Pump: Alaris
- Medication Dispensing: Pyxis
Required Qualifications
- Experience: Minimum 2 years surgical assisting experience
- Licensure/Certification:
- Certified Surgical First Assist (CSFA) from one of the following:
- National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA)
- American Board of Surgical Assistants (ABSA)
- National Commission for the Certification of Surgical Assistants (NCCSA)
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
- Travel Experience: Not recommended for first-time travelers; requires further approval for first-time travelers

- Scrub color: Surgical scrubs provided; scrub caps allowed but must be covered by surgical bouffant

This role is ideal for experienced surgical assistants with a strong background in neuro, orthopedic, and general surgery cases who are comfortable with on-call responsibilities and variable shift start times. Prior travel experience is preferred.
