Job Opportunity: Neuro ICU Registered Nurse

Location: Columbia, South Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Description

  • Must have strong Neuro ICU experience.
  • Experience with EVDs (External Ventricular Drains), lumbar drains, and Subarachnoid Hemorrhage (SAH) patients required.
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification is required.
  • At least one year of experience with Epic EMR is mandatory.
  • Candidates without strong Neuro ICU experience will not be considered.
  • Floating to other units and/or campuses within a reasonable radius is required; staff will only float to units where they are qualified and competent. Refusal to float may result in termination of assignment.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in South Carolina.
  • Minimum of 1 year of Neuro ICU experience within the last year.
  • Current ACLS certification issued by the American Heart Association or American Red Cross.
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification required.
  • Experience with Epic EMR.
  • Experience with External Ventricular Drains (EVDs), lumbar drains, and Subarachnoid Hemorrhage (SAH) patients.
  • National Tech Cert Verification.
  • Completion of Orientation Safety Manual Acknowledgement.
  • Certifications in NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program), TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course), and EFM (Electronic Fetal Monitoring).
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).

Compliance and Documentation Requirements

  • Valid Driver’s License/State ID required for computer access and on-duty identification.
  • Background check within 12 months, including 7-year history and alias searches.
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 30 days of start and every 30 days thereafter.
  • Physical exam within 1 year attesting ability to meet physical demands.
  • Drug screening within 1 year, updated annually.
  • Immunizations and health documents required:
    • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (within 10 years if working in high-risk areas)
    • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 90 days of start
    • Rubeola, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella (positive titer or 2 vaccines)
    • Hepatitis B vaccination series, positive titer, or signed declination
    • Seasonal flu vaccine or approved exemption (not required for remote workers)
  • Respirator fit test completed onsite during orientation (N95 masks commonly used).

Orientation and Testing

  • Completion of online orientation modules within 72 hours of assignment.
  • Pre-assignment testing (medication and arrhythmia exams) must be completed within 72 hours of receiving login information; two attempts allowed.
  • EKG practice test and study guide provided for applicable RNs.
  • Annual competency exams and core training (Parts I, II, III) required.

Additional Notes

  • Floating policy must be signed and renewed annually.
  • Badge photo required prior to start (passport-style, plain background).
  • Candidates must be flexible to float to other units as needed within their competency.
  • Prior travel experience is not explicitly required.

This position is ideal for experienced Neuro ICU RNs with strong critical care skills, familiarity with neurological patient care, and the ability to adapt to multiple units within a healthcare system.
