Job Opportunity: Medical Surgical Registered Nurse
Location: Wilmington, North Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Summary
- Work 12-hour night shifts (18:45 - 07:15) with 36 or 48 hours accepted per week
- Target nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:6-7
- Charge nurse role required for night travelers
- Floating to similar units and alternate care locations with inpatient holding
- Assigned to every other weekend and must be able to work holidays
- May care for COVID-19 patients
- Assigned to Inclement Weather Team and expected to work on Storm/Hurricane Teams during catastrophic events or disasters
Patient Population
- Adults and geriatrics
- General medical/surgical patients
- Daily census approximately 43 patients
Unit & Clinical Details
- Care includes insulin and heparin drips, wound vac dressing changes, high flow oxygen
- Occasional short-term BiPap respiratory support (no additional training required)
- No PCU level patients on this unit
- Documentation and medication systems: EPIC, PYXIS, SBAR
Required Qualifications
- Discipline: Registered Nurse (RN)
- Minimum 2 years of nursing experience
- EPIC experience required
- BCLS certification required
- Must be able to take care of insulin and heparin drips
- Charge nurse experience preferred
- CPI certification preferred
- Must pass Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam within 72 hours of start (minimum 82% score required)
- Must pass EKG testing prior to start
- Able to work holidays and weekends as scheduled
- No prior travel experience required (1st time travelers accepted)
Orientation & Training
- Unit orientation: 24 hours
- Must complete facility-specific mandatory education and compliance training
- Must complete medication safety training prior to or shortly after start
- Must complete Non-Novant Health Worker Orientation (approx. 8-10 hours for acute candidates)
- Must complete annual flu vaccination or approved exemption documentation
- Must complete required background checks and health screenings (including TB test, immunizations, drug screening)
Additional Requirements
- Must be able to work during inclement weather and disaster situations
- Floating to similar units and alternate care locations required
- Call required if scheduled on call shifts
- Must be able to work every other weekend and holidays
- Must provide photo ID and complete all required facility-specific documentation prior to start
Notes
- Scrubs: Navy color (not provided)
- Physical exam and certain health documents required as per travel healthcare standards
- Drug testing within 6 months of start required
- Flu vaccination or exemption required during flu season
- Background checks must be current within specified timeframes
- Candidate must complete all required competency exams and certifications as outlined
This position is ideal for RNs with medical-surgical experience who are comfortable working night shifts, charge nurse responsibilities, and flexible scheduling including holidays and weekends. Prior travel experience is not required.
