Job Opportunity: CVICU Registered Nurse
Location: New Brunswick, New Jersey
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Description
- Provide nursing care in a Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (CVICU) setting.
- Patient ratio typically 1:1 to 1:2; ratios may vary when floated.
- Patient population includes fresh heart surgery patients, ventilated patients, chest tubes, lumbar drains, and patients with chronic and acute renal failure.
- Floating required to all ICUs, PACU, ED for ICU holding patients, and all Intermediate Care units.
Required Experience
- Minimum 2 years of current CVICU experience required.
- SICU experience may be considered with initial CVICU training.
- Experience with devices such as Impella, IABP, and CRRT using Prismax or experience with fresh heart cases is mandatory.
- Required skills include post-op open heart recovery, Swan-Ganz catheter, Flotrack, temporary pacers, arterial lines, and chest tubes.
- Experience with fresh open heart surgeries such as CABG, MVR, AVR, TAVR is essential.
Schedule & Time Off
- Every other weekend and holiday required as applicable.
- All time off or schedule accommodations must be approved prior to offer.
Certifications Required
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
- NIH Stroke Scale Certification
Licensure
- Must hold a valid Registered Nurse (RN) license for New Jersey.
Prior Travel Experience
- First-time travelers are accepted; prior travel experience is not required.
Additional Requirements & Compliance
- Floating policy acknowledgment required for every new assignment.
- Background check required within 30 days of start, including criminal, alias, and nationwide searches.
- Drug screening required within 30 days of start.
- Respiratory medical clearance and on-site fit testing mandatory prior to start and annually thereafter.
- Influenza vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required annually.
- Physical exam within the last 12 months confirming ability to perform essential job functions and free of communicable disease.
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray per facility protocol required.
- Completion of medication/pharmacology competency exam, dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam, IV therapy/infusion exam, and other required competency exams within specified timeframes.
- Pass/fail testing for EKG and medication knowledge required with remediation policy in place.
- References: Two references within the last 2 years, including at least one managerial reference.
- Employment application or resume with 7 years of work history required.
- Work history verification required for New Jersey candidates for at least 1 year prior to start date.
Patient Care Equipment & Technology
- Experience with Impella, Intra-Aortic Balloon Pump (IABP), and Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT) using Prismax.
- Familiarity with Swan-Ganz catheters, Flotrack monitoring, temporary pacers, arterial lines, and chest tubes.
Patient Population
- Post-operative open heart surgery patients (CABG, MVR, AVR, TAVR).
- Ventilated patients and those with chest tubes and lumbar drains.
- Patients with chronic and acute renal failure.
Notes
- Locals are accepted for this position.
- Floating to other critical care and intermediate care units is required.
- All certifications must be current and valid at the time of assignment start.
- Candidates must comply with all facility-specific education, training, and attestation requirements prior to start.
Requirements/Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in New Jersey
- Minimum 2 years of CVICU experience, with CVICU experience within the last year
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Current ACLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
- Current BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
- IV Certification
- Experience with Impella, Intra-Aortic Balloon Pump (IABP), and Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT) using Prismax
- Experience with fresh heart cases and post-operative open heart recovery
- Experience with Swan-Ganz catheters, Flotrack monitoring, temporary pacers, arterial lines, and chest tubes
