Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse - Step Down Unit
Location: Kalamazoo, Michigan
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Description
- Provide nursing care on a step down unit caring for general medical and oncology stepdown patients.
- Administer chemotherapy via IV and start IVs.
- Utilize equipment such as Welch Allyn Vital Sign Towers, Sigma IV Pumps.
- Document patient care using EPIC.
- Nurse to patient ratio typically 1:4-6; ratios may flex with support staff.
- Floating to other med-surg areas including Acute Unit (AU) and Emergency Room (ER) to care for med-surg patients.
- Weekend work every other weekend; scheduling includes some self-scheduling with weekends assigned by management.
- Block scheduling may be accommodated.
- Must be available for the first two weeks of the assignment.
Required Experience and Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Michigan.
- Minimum 2 years of Progressive Care Unit (PCU) experience, with at least some experience within the last year.
- Oncology experience.
- Chemotherapy (Chemo) experience.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association.
- Oncology Nursing Certification (ONCC) or Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) certification.
- National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification.
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
Additional Requirements
- Physical exam within 1 year of start.
- Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 30 days of start.
- Proof of Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap vaccination.
- Immunizations or positive titers for Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella.
- Hepatitis B titer, series, or documented declination.
- 10-panel drug test including Marijuana/THC within 30 days of start.
- Annual flu vaccination or approved medical/spiritual exemption.
- Completion of medication/pharmacology competency exam within 1 year prior to assignment start.
- Background check including criminal history, SSN trace, national and state searches.
- Michigan fingerprinting within 45 days of start.
- Central Registry Clearance for applicable pediatric and specialty placements.
- Completion and acknowledgment of facility-specific policies including Code of Conduct and Appearance Standards.
- References: One professional reference from a direct supervisor or manager required.
- Complete employment application/resume with full 7-year work history, no gaps.
Work Environment & Scheduling
- No call responsibilities.
- Floating to other med-surg units as needed.
- Weekend shifts every other weekend.
- Nurse to patient ratio generally 1:4-6, with support staff available if ratios increase.
- Chemotherapy admissions reduce patient assignment ratios.
- Scheduling flexibility with some self-scheduling options; weekends assigned by management.
