Job Opportunity: Labor and Delivery Nurse (Travel/Contract)
Location: Seattle, Washington
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Summary
Seeking experienced Registered Nurses for a high-risk, high-acuity Labor and Delivery unit. The role requires working in a fast-paced environment with a focus on high-risk obstetrics and newborn care. Candidates must be able to float to postpartum and antepartum units and may float to nearby facilities providing Mother/Baby care.
Required Experience
- Minimum 3-5 years of nursing experience in a high acuity and high pace environment (3 years minimum with high-risk experience preferred).
- Prior travel experience required; first-time travelers will not be accepted.
- Must have current supervisory references.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide care in a high-risk, high-volume Labor & Delivery unit with approximately 500-600 deliveries per month.
- Function as Baby Nurse during delivery and provide newborn care until transfer to postpartum (including eyes, thighs, assessments, and Vitamin K injections).
- Circulate in the operating room during deliveries (mandatory skill).
- Administer medications such as Heparin, Insulin, and Magnesium Sulfate.
- Work every other weekend and holidays as needed.
- Float between Labor & Delivery, postpartum, and antepartum units.
Patient Population
- Midwifery clients, private OB patients, adult recovery services supporting substance recovery, and community care clinics.
Certifications Required
- Required:
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)
- Preferred:
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
- AWHONN Advanced and Intermediate certifications
- Electronic Fetal Monitoring (EFM) certification (AWHONN or NCC-EFM acceptable)
Licensure
- Must have a current Registered Nurse (RN) license valid in Washington State.
- Compact license holders are accepted if active.
- NURSYS verification required.
Schedule
- Schedule posted every 6 weeks and designed to meet unit needs.
- Work every other weekend and holidays as needed.
Additional Requirements
- Must pass clinical review with proof of current NURSYS verification.
- Must provide proof of required certifications with submission.
- Must have supervisory references.
- Float policy acknowledgment required; may be required to float to other nearby facilities.
- EPIC electronic medical record experience preferred (EPIC hard stop).
- Staffing follows AWHONN guidelines.
Health and Compliance Requirements
- Physical exam within 1 year of start.
- Immunizations and screenings including:
- TB test or chest X-ray (annual)
- TDAP vaccine within 10 years or declination
- MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) vaccination or positive titer
- Varicella vaccination or positive titer
- Hepatitis B vaccination or declination
- Flu vaccine during flu season or declination
- COVID vaccine or declination
- 10-panel drug screen within 90 days of start (no instant tests).
- Respirator fit testing (annual, travel only).
Background and Documentation
- Background check within 45 days of start covering all locations lived/worked in past 7 years.
- Education verification required.
- Employment application covering at least last 5 years.
- Minimum of 2 supervisor references covering 1 year of employment in a comparable specialty/setting within the last 3 years.
- Skills checklist updated annually.
Requirements/Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Washington State.
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
- Minimum of 3 years of Labor and Delivery nursing experience, including experience within the last year.
- Experience working with high-risk patients in a high acuity and high pace environment (3 years minimum).
- Completion of at least one travel nursing assignment.
- Current BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association.
- Current Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification.
Notes
- Pre-approved time off is considered on a case-by-case basis.
- Candidates must have experience with high-risk deliveries and newborn care skills as outlined; candidates lacking these will not be considered.
- This is a travel contract position requiring flexibility and adaptability to a fast-paced, high-acuity environment.
