Description
Registered Nurse - Medical Surgical Oncology (Travel/Contract)
Location: Columbus, Ohio
Contract Length: 16 weeks
Job Summary
- Work on a mixed acuity Progressive Care Unit (PCU) / Medical-Surgical Telemetry unit caring for medical oncology patients.
- Unit has approximately 24 PCU beds and 24 Medical-Surgical Telemetry beds.
- Patient population includes a variety of solid tumors and some blood cancers with high acuity.
- Pediatric patients are very rare on this unit; pediatric experience is not required.
- Chemotherapy competence is not required but training is available through a 2-day chemotherapy course if interested.
Schedule
- Self-scheduling requests are accepted before final schedule posting.
- Orientation:
- Week 1: Monday to Friday, day shift orientation.
- Week 2: 36 hours of on-unit orientation with a preceptor.
- Shift: 12-hour day/night rotating shifts; assignments reviewed every 4 weeks but may change based on staffing needs.
- Weekend shifts vary.
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Ohio
- Minimum 1 year of Medical-Surgical / Telemetry nursing experience within the last year
- Oncology experience
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association
Unit Equipment & Procedures
- B450 monitors with GE telemetry system.
- Bladder Scanner.
- Alaris infusion pumps.
- Continuous Bladder Irrigation.
- Patient Controlled Analgesia (PCA) pumps.
- Heavy focus on infection prevention protocols and patient fall prevention.
Patient Care Details
- High acuity oncology patients with diverse diagnoses.
- Pediatric patients are rarely cared for by agency staff.
Background & Compliance Requirements
- 7-year criminal background check within 90 days of start, including FBI and BCI fingerprinting.
- Education verification from accredited nursing programs required.
- Ohio BCI & FBI fingerprinting required with specific codes and timelines.
- Drug screening: Negative 10-panel drug screen within 3 months of start (no pending tests allowed).
- Various health documents required including:
- Physical exam within 1 year of start.
- Immunizations and titers for MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella), Varicella, Hepatitis B, Tdap, TB testing or questionnaire.
- Seasonal flu vaccination or declination during flu season.
- Annual competency exams including medication/pharmacology and dysrhythmia/EKG competency required.
- Unit-specific competency exams required.
- References: 2 professional references required, including at least one from a manager or formal leader.
