Job Opportunity: Certified OR Tech / Surgical Tech (CST)
Location: Columbia, South Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 10 weeks
Position Details
- Specialty: Surgical Services
- Shift: 4 days per week, 10-hour shifts (6:45 AM – 5:15 PM)
- On-Call: Yes, approximately 1 call per week plus 1 late shift and 1-2 weekends every 6 weeks
- Weekend Requirement: 1 to 2 weekends every 6 weeks (covered in call requirement)
- Floating: May float between service lines and possibly to sister facilities
Required Qualifications
- Minimum 3 years of experience as a Surgical Technologist
- Surgical Technologist experience within the last year
- Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) or NBSTSA certification required
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required
- Radiation Badge required and must be provided by the agency prior to start
Work Environment
- Facility Type: Acute Care Hospital
- Beds: 75 staffed beds
- Scrubs: Provided
- Charting System: Epic
- Parking: Free with pass
Scheduling & Hours
- Facility may call off 1 shift every 2 weeks; called off hours can be broken down but total no more than 1 shift
- Open to block scheduling with manager approval, depending on unit needs
- Local radius for travel: 60 miles
- Local candidates accepted at a reduced rate
Important Notes
- Hurricane Season: Travelers may be assigned to emergency response teams during hurricane season (June through November), with peak activity in August and September. Confirm availability before accepting assignments during this period.
- Prior Travel Experience: Not explicitly required for this position.
Compliance & Documentation Requirements
- Background Checks:
- Annual background check covering all locations lived/worked in the past 7 years
- Includes SSN trace, county/statewide checks, sex offender registry, national criminal, and employment/education verification
- Education Verification: Required; diploma or transcripts may be used as placeholders if verification is pending
- References: Proof of 2 clinical references required, including at least one from the unit of assignment
- Work History Verification: Last 3 clinical employers verified through a third-party vendor
- Photo for Badge: Passport-style photo with solid light background, frontal view, shoulders up
- Physical Exam: Must be current within 90 days of start, attesting to ability to meet physical demands, updated annually
- Drug Testing: 10-panel drug screen within 90 days of start (no instant tests)
- Immunizations & Health:
- Tdap within 10 years or declination form
- Negative TB test (T-spot or Q-Gold) within 90 days or appropriate follow-up if positive
- Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella: Positive titers or 2 vaccines required
- Hepatitis B: Titer, vaccine series, or declination required
- Flu vaccine required during flu season or medical/religious exemption (no declinations accepted)
- COVID vaccines highly preferred; declination form required if not vaccinated
- Respirator Clearance: Annual medical clearance required for respirator use via virtual questionnaire
- Radiation Badge: Must be obtained prior to starting; process may take 5-7 days
- Competency Exams: Medication/pharmacology and other competency exams as applicable
Orientation & Onboarding
- Completion of facility-specific orientation modules required prior to start (approx. 2 hours)
- First Day Instructions (FDI) and OurDay platform access provided after clearance
- Upload vaccination records (COVID, flu) into OurDay platform
- Various facility-specific forms and agreements must be completed before starting
Additional Information
- Scrubs and parking provided at no cost
- Facility uses Epic for charting
- Floating between units and possibly sister facilities may be required
- Local candidates accepted
