Description

Job Opportunity: Certified OR Tech / Surgical Tech

Location: Orangeburg, South Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Position Details

  • Specialty: Surgical Services
  • Shift: 4x10 hour shifts (6:45 AM to 5:15 PM)
  • Operating Rooms: 9 ORs
  • On-Call: Yes
    • 4 weekdays on-call and 1.5 weekends on-call every 4 weeks
    • Weekend on-call includes at least one full weekend and one half weekend every 4 weeks
  • Floating: Yes, between service lines (not to sister facilities)
  • Types of Cases: General Surgery, Robotics, Orthopedics, Podiatry, Gynecology, Eyes, Urology, ENT

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum 2 years of experience as a Surgical Technologist
  • Surgical Technologist experience within the last year
  • Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) or NBSTSA certification required
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required
  • Radiation Badge required

Facility & Work Environment

  • Acute Care Hospital setting
  • 286 staffed beds
  • Scrubs provided
  • Charting system: Epic
  • Free parking available
  • Local radius rule: 60 miles
  • Locals may be accepted on a case-by-case basis

Important Notes

  • Block schedule accommodations require manager approval and depend on unit needs
  • Facility may call off 1 shift every 2 weeks; called off hours can be combined to equal 1 shift
  • During hurricane season (June-November, peak in August-September), all staff may be assigned to emergency response teams; new or extension assignments during this time should be considered carefully

Required Documentation & Compliance

  • Proof of work eligibility (I-9 attestation and completed form)
  • Copy of Driver’s License/State ID
  • Copy of Social Security Card or SSN verification
  • Background checks including:
    • SSN trace, criminal, sex offender registry, national criminal, FACIS 3, and international searches if applicable
    • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks within 30 days of start and updated for renewals
  • Education verification or diploma/transcripts as placeholder
  • Primary source license verification (South Carolina RN license required)
  • NURSYS verification for RNs
  • Drug screening: 10-panel urine drug screen within 90 days of start (no instant tests)
  • Physical exam updated annually, attesting ability to meet physical demands
  • Immunizations and titers:
    • Tdap within 10 years or declination form
    • Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella titers or vaccination proof (boosters may be required)
    • Hepatitis B titer, vaccine series, or declination
    • Negative TB test (T-spot or Q-Gold within 90 days) or chest x-ray if prior positive
  • Flu vaccine required during flu season (Aug 1 - Apr 30) or medical/religious exemption (no declinations accepted)
  • COVID vaccination highly preferred; declination form required if not vaccinated
  • Respirator medical clearance annually (RespSafety questionnaire)
  • Color blindness testing prior to start
  • Medication/pharmacology competency exam required
  • Competency exam for OR required
  • Radiation badge process must be completed before starting floor work (may take 5-7 days to receive)
  • Clear, passport-style badge photo required before start

Certifications & Training

  • BLS (Basic Life Support) - AHA or equivalent
  • NBSTSA certification
  • Radiation badge (agency provided)
  • Additional certifications as applicable (e.g., ACLS, PALS, TNCC) depending on unit assignment
  • Orientation modules and facility-specific training required before start (approx. 2-6 hours)

Additional Requirements

  • Proof of 2 clinical references or hospital evaluations
  • Employment application/resume
  • Skills checklist updated annually
  • Compliance with facility-specific documents and acknowledgments (e.g., HIPAA attestation)

This position is ideal for experienced Certified Surgical Technologists who are flexible with on-call duties and floating between surgical service lines, and who meet the required certifications and compliance standards.
