Description

Registered Nurse - Medical Surgical Neuro

Location: Winston Salem, North Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Summary

Seeking an experienced Registered Nurse for a Medical Surgical Neuro unit. The unit primarily cares for stroke patients and other neurological diagnoses including epilepsy, neurosurgery patients, and subdural hematomas. The unit includes a 4-bed Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU), with a daily census of about 42 patients.


Shift & Schedule

  • Shift: 12-hour nights
  • Hours: 36 or 48 hours per week
  • Ratio: 1:6 nurse-to-patient ratio
  • Floating required to other MedSurg/Telemetry areas, including possible COVID care units
  • Must work every other weekend; if a weekend shift is missed, it must be made up
  • Preferred scheduling; block scheduling not always guaranteed
  • Orientation: 36 hours
  • Scrubs: Navy color

Required Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in North Carolina
  • Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
  • Minimum 1 year of Med Surg experience within the last year
  • Completion of 2 or more travel assignments
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
  • IV start proficiency
  • Interpretation and management of dysrhythmias

Patient Population & Unit Details

  • Patients primarily include stroke, epilepsy, neurosurgery, traumatic and non-traumatic subdural hematomas, and other neurological conditions
  • 4-bed Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU) with specialized training available but not typically required for travelers
  • Unit uses PYXIS, EPIC, and SBAR systems

Additional Requirements & Notes

  • Floating to other MedSurg/Telemetry units and COVID care units may be frequent
  • If a scheduled weekend shift is missed, it must be made up either the same week or at the end of the contract
  • Must adhere to navy scrub dress code
  • Must complete a 36-hour orientation
  • Must pass an EKG competency exam with a minimum score of 82% (three attempts allowed)
  • Background checks, drug screening, immunizations, and health documentation required per standard clinical travel assignment protocols
  • Fit testing for N95 or PAPR training required
  • Flu vaccination or approved exemption required during flu season
  • Various facility-specific compliance and education modules must be completed prior to or during assignment

Compliance & Documentation Requirements

  • Physical exam within 1 year of start (or within 30 days if past positive TB)
  • Negative TB test or chest x-ray per protocol
  • Drug screening within 30 days of start
  • Immunizations/titers for Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, Hepatitis B, and seasonal flu vaccination or exemption
  • Background checks including criminal, education verification, and state-specific registry searches
  • Completion of required competency exams and certifications
  • Facility-specific orientation and compliance training modules
