Job Opportunity: Medical Surgical Nurse (Travel/Contract)
Location: Wilmington, North Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Summary
- Work 12-hour night shifts (18:45 - 07:15) with target nurse-to-patient ratios of 1:6-7.
- Charge nurse role required for night travelers.
- Floating to similar units and alternate care locations with inpatient holding.
- Assigned to every other weekend and must be able to work holidays.
- May care for COVID-19 patients.
- Assigned to Inclement Weather Team and Storm/Hurricane Team; may be required to report during catastrophic events or disasters.
- Patient population includes adults and geriatrics on a general medical/surgical unit with a daily census of approximately 43.
Required Skills and Experience
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in North Carolina.
- Minimum 2 years of medical-surgical nursing experience, with at least some experience within the last year.
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
- Experience in charge nurse roles.
- Proficient with EPIC electronic health record system.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association or American Red Cross.
Preferred Skills
- CPI (Crisis Prevention Institute) certification.
- Charge nurse experience.
Unit and Clinical Details
- Procedures: Insulin drips, heparin drips, wound vac dressing changes, high flow oxygen.
- Occasional short-term BiPAP respiratory support (no additional training needed).
- No PCU-level patients on this unit.
- Documentation and medication systems: PYXIS, EPIC, SBAR.
- Unit orientation: 24 hours.
- Scrubs: Navy color (not provided).
Scheduling and Work Requirements
- 36 or 48 hours per week accepted (OT billed only after 48 hours if applicable).
- Call required if scheduled on call shifts.
- Must be able to work holidays and every other weekend.
- Floating to similar units as needed.
Compliance and Testing Requirements
- Must pass EKG competency testing prior to start.
- Required to complete medication/pharmacology competency exams and color blindness testing.
- Background checks and verifications required within specified timeframes.
- Drug screening within 6 months of start required.
- Immunizations and health documents required, including:
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year.
- Rubeola (measles), mumps, rubella, hepatitis B, varicella immunizations or titers.
- Flu vaccination or approved exemption during flu season.
- Physical exam not required for this crisis profile.
Certifications Required
- BCLS (Basic Cardiac Life Support).
- CPI certification preferred (MOAB required for ER and Behavioral Health nurses).
- Additional certifications may be required based on unit needs (e.g., ACLS, PALS, TNCC) but not specified for this role.
Additional Notes
- Must be able to work holidays and be flexible for inclement weather and disaster response assignments.
- Photo ID and badge photo required for onboarding.
- Various facility-specific orientation and compliance trainings required prior to start.
- Candidate must complete required education modules and compliance training as directed.
