Job Opportunity: Medical Lab Technician

Location: Columbia, South Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Position Details

  • Specialty: Laboratory (MLT 2 level)
  • Shift: 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each, Nights (7 PM - 7 AM)
  • Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
  • On-call: No
  • Floating: No floating between service lines or sister facilities

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum 3 years of Medical Lab Technician experience
  • Medical Lab Technician experience within the last year
  • Completion of at least one travel assignment
  • National certification required: ASCP or AMT

Work Environment

  • Facility type: Free standing Emergency Department
  • Total staffed beds: 10 ED rooms
  • Charting system: Epic
  • Scrub color: Burgundy
  • Parking: Free

Important Notes

  • Travelers should be aware of potential emergency response team assignments during hurricane season (June through November, peak in August and September).
  • Facility may call off 1 shift per 2 weeks.
  • Local candidates may be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Required Documentation & Compliance

  • Proof of work eligibility (I-9 attestation and form)
  • Copy of Driver’s License/State ID
  • Copy of Social Security Card or SSN verification
  • Background check within 90 days of start, including multiple state and national checks
  • Education verification or diploma/transcripts as placeholder
  • Drug screening: 10-panel drug screen within 90 days of start
  • Physical exam within 90 days of start, updated annually, confirming ability to meet job demands
  • Immunizations and titers: Tdap, MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella), Varicella, Hepatitis B, TB test (T-spot or Q-Gold within 90 days)
  • COVID-19 vaccination records highly preferred; declination form required if not vaccinated
  • Flu vaccination or medical/religious exemption required during flu season (Aug-April)
  • Respirator medical clearance annually (RespSafety questionnaire)
  • Clear, passport-style photo for badge
  • References: Minimum 2 clinical references, including at least one from the unit of assignment
  • Employment history verification for last 3 clinical employers
  • Completion of facility-specific orientation modules prior to start (approx. 2 hours)

Additional Requirements

  • Must complete facility-specific forms including confidentiality and security agreements, contractor forms, and job description acknowledgment prior to start
  • No floating or cross-coverage between units
  • No on-call duties required
  • Must be able to work night shifts and every other weekend

Certifications & Licensure Notes

  • Only national certification (ASCP or AMT) required for this MLT role; no state license needed
  • BLS preferred but not mandatory
  • Other certifications such as ACLS, PALS, NRP, TNCC, NIH Stroke, EFM, IV Therapy, or Radiation Badge are not required for this position

Summary

This is a night-shift Medical Lab Technician travel contract position requiring at least 3 years of experience and national certification. The role is in a small emergency department setting with no on-call or floating duties. Prior travel experience is required; first-time travelers will not be considered. Compliance with extensive background checks, immunizations, and facility-specific onboarding is mandatory.
