Job Opportunity: Labor and Delivery Nurse (Registered Nurse)

Location: Charlotte, North Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Overview

This is a challenging, fast-paced Labor and Delivery nursing position on a high-volume maternity unit with over 300 births per month. Double labor assignments are common daily. The unit cares for obstetrical patients 16 weeks and greater, including high-risk antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum care, as well as some patients under 16 weeks on the high-risk maternity unit. The unit also performs scheduled and unscheduled Cesarean births and rescue cervical cerclage procedures.


Work Details

  • Shift: 12-hour day shifts (06:45 AM – 7:15 PM)
  • Hours: Up to 36 hours can be offered
  • Patient Ratios: 2:1 nurse-to-patient ratio
  • Volume: Average 20 births in 24 hours, 30-40 admits, 40 visits/day, 20 rooms
  • Weekend Requirement: Minimum every other weekend (6 weekend shifts per 6-week schedule)
  • Float Requirement: Float to other areas as needed on this special maternity care high-risk OB unit
  • Orientation: 24 hours
  • Scrubs: Provided (blue)
  • Precepting: May be required to precept/orient new staff members

Requirements/Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in North Carolina
  • Labor and Delivery experience with a minimum of 2 years
  • Labor and Delivery experience within the last year
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
  • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) certification
  • Orientation Safety Manual Acknowledgement
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)

Required Certifications

  • BCLS (Basic Cardiac Life Support)
  • AWHONN Intermediate Fetal Monitoring
  • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)

Patient Population and Unit Details

  • Obstetrical patients 16 weeks and greater, including high-risk antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum care
  • High-risk maternity patients under 16 weeks
  • Obstetrical triage unit for screening and outpatient procedures (antenatal fetal surveillance, IV hydration, medication administration)
  • Scheduled and unscheduled Cesarean births and rescue cervical cerclage performed
  • Unit is very fast-paced and higher acuity than typical maternity units
  • Strong preference for RNs with circulate to OR experience
  • Unit systems include PYXIS, EPIC, and SBAR

Important Notes

  • RTO (Return to Office) after booking is NOT allowed and cannot be worked out onsite; call-offs or additional RTO may lead to cancellation
  • Double labor assignments are a daily occurrence
  • 13 to 26 week contracts accepted

Compliance and Onboarding Requirements

  • Background checks and verifications as required (education, licensure, drug screening, immunizations, etc.)
  • Required health documents include TB testing, immunizations (Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella), flu vaccination or exemption during flu season
  • Mandatory completion of facility-specific orientation and training modules
  • Photo for badge required immediately after signing contract
  • Must complete medication safety and confidentiality agreements
  • Competency exams and skills checklists required as per facility standards

The position requires flexibility for floating and weekend shifts, adherence to strict attendance policies, and completion of comprehensive onboarding and compliance requirements.
