Medical Laboratory Technologist

Location: Mauston, Wisconsin
Employment Type: Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks

Position Summary

The Medical Laboratory Technologist performs laboratory tests and procedures under supervision. Responsibilities include working in one or more of the following sections: Hematology, Microbiology, Serology, Blood Gas/Point of Care, Chemistry, or Blood Bank. The role involves maintaining supplies, performing maintenance on analyzers, validating new equipment, updating policies, and ensuring quality control and accuracy of test results.

Key Responsibilities

• Perform laboratory tests in hematology (including manual differentials and morphological examination), coagulation, chemistry, blood gas, serology, blood bank (including antibody identification), and microbiology.
• Maintain supply inventory and perform weekly/monthly maintenance on analyzers.
• Assist with implementation and validation of new analyzers and tests.
• Review and update section policies and procedures annually.
• Perform calibration, linearity, and data review for tests as needed.
• Conduct competency assessments and review proficiency test results; investigate and educate staff on failed results.
• Communicate critical test results promptly to physicians or nurses.
• Run and analyze quality-control tests; take corrective actions when necessary.
• Document instrument checks, maintenance, and troubleshooting actions.
• Provide in-service training and instruction to laboratory personnel and students.
• Assist with specimen collection and processing, including bone marrow and body fluid collections.
• Maintain a clean and organized work area and restock supplies daily.
• Follow laboratory and hospital policies, procedures, and safety practices.

Required Qualifications

• Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) or Medical Technologist (MT) with at least 1 year of recent experience as a Medical Laboratory Technician.
• Two-year Medical Laboratory Technician degree, four-year degree from an accredited program, or two-year degree with MT AAB Certification recognized.
• ASCP certification or equivalent required or must be obtained within 1 year of hire.
