Description
Registered Nurse - Medical Surgical
Location: Indianapolis, Indiana
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Description
- Work on a medical-surgical unit specializing in post-operative care of colorectal surgery patients.
- Care for patients requiring negative-airflow rooms; must be fit-tested for N95 mask or trained on PAPR device use.
- Expected to work every other weekend; consecutive weekends may be required based on operational needs.
- May be required to float to different levels of care including Med-Surg, PCU, and ICU. Refusal to float may result in contract termination.
- Charge nurse responsibilities may be required with provided training and resources.
- Teaching facility environment; travel nurses must be willing to precept or have students shadow them.
- Staffing ratios typically 1:5-6.
Required Qualifications
- License: Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license for Indiana.
- Experience: Minimum 2 years of nursing experience; Level 1 Trauma experience preferred.
- Certifications:
- BLS (Basic Life Support) - AHA or RQI accepted (required)
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) - AHA or RQI accepted (may be required depending on unit)
- Other certifications such as PALS, NRP, TNCC, Chemotherapy, EFM, NIH Stroke Certification may be required depending on unit assignment.
- Fit Testing: Must have a fit test within 12 months for approved respirators (N95 or PAPR).
- Health Requirements:
- Physical exam within 12 months of start date.
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year.
- Immunizations or positive titers for Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, Hepatitis B. Declinations/exemptions generally not accepted.
- Flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required for flu season.
- Negative 10-panel drug screen within 12 months.
- Color blindness exam (Ishihara or equivalent) with 100% minimum score.
- Background Checks:
- Comprehensive background check including 7 years of residence/work history, SSN trace, criminal, sex offender, and education verification.
- EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks within 30 days of start.
- References: Minimum 2 references from recent employment with supervisory titles, verified within 2 years.
- Other: Skills checklist and competency exams required annually.
Additional Information
- First-time travel nurses are accepted.
- Call-in shift policies require making up missed shifts or adding them to the end of the contract depending on FTE status.
- Indiana RN license restrictions effective 11/30/2024 do not apply to Perioperative/OR, Allied, and Ambulatory RN travelers.
- Facility-specific orientation, compliance, and safety training modules must be completed prior to start.
- Candidates must be willing to complete required facility-specific documentation and training in a timely manner.
