Description
Registered Nurse – Neuro ICU
Location: Peoria, Illinois
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Unit Details
- Department: Neuro ICU
- Number of Beds: 18
- Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: 1:2
- Shift Length: 12 hours
- Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
- Holiday Requirement: Rotating every other holiday
- Call or Standby Requirement: None
- Floating: Travelers float first; nurses may float to intermediate (1:3 ratio) or general floors (1:4 ratio)
- Orientation: 20 hours (one 8-hour shift and one 12-hour shift)
Patient Population & Common Diagnoses
- Patients with ventriculostomies
- Stroke patients (with or without tPA)
- Post-craniectomy care
Required Skills & Experience
- Ventriculostomy care
- NIH Stroke Scale Certification
- Ventilator management
- Arterial and central line care
- Administration and management of tPA
- Acute stroke management
- Post-craniectomy patient care
- Ability to titrate drips as ordered by physicians (various drips, not always set rates)
- Troubleshooting respiratory equipment (ventilators, CPAP, BiPAP, High Flow)
- Reading and interpreting telemetry strips (Phillips monitors)
Staffing & Support
- Charge Nurse: Present; may take patient assignments if staffing is limited
- House Supervisor: Present 24/7
- Nurse Aides/Patient Care Techs: Yes, with a ratio of 9:1
- Telemetry/Monitor Techs: Present on every shift
Required Certifications & Licenses
- Valid RN license in Illinois
- ICU - Intensive Care Unit experience within the last year (minimum 1 year)
- ACLS issued by American Heart Association
- BLS issued by American Heart Association
- NIH Stroke Scale Certification (NIHSS)
- Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
- Experience with ventriculostomy care
- Experience managing ventilators
- Experience with arterial lines
- Experience with central lines
- Experience administering and managing tPA
- Experience in acute stroke management
- Experience in post-craniectomy patient care
Additional Information
- Drug-Free workplace: Negative drug screen required for all panels
- Local placements accepted within a 50-mile radius
- Non-billable orientation hours: 12 hours (do not count toward guaranteed hours)
- Nurse must be able to titrate drips and manage complex ICU care
Summary
This is a 13-week Neuro ICU RN contract position requiring strong critical care skills, especially in stroke and neuro patient management. Candidates must have ACLS and BLS certifications, an active Illinois RN license, and experience with ventilators, lines, and titratable drips. The role involves 12-hour shifts with every other weekend and holiday rotation, and includes orientation specific to the unit.
