Job Opportunity: Step Down Registered Nurse

Location: Kalamazoo, Michigan
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks

Job Description

• Work on a step down unit caring for general medical and oncology stepdown patients.
• Oncology/Chemotherapy experience is highly preferred.
• Administer chemotherapy via IV and start IVs.
• Use equipment such as Welch Allyn Vital Sign Towers, Sigma IV Pumps, and EPIC for documentation.
• Nurse to patient ratio typically 1:4-6, with support staff available if ratios increase. Chemotherapy admissions reduce assignment ratios.
• Floating to other med-surg areas including Acute Unit (AU) and Emergency Room (ER) to care for med-surg patients.
• Weekend shifts every other weekend; weekends assigned by manager/scheduler. Other days can be self-scheduled.
• Block scheduling may be accommodated upon request.
• Must be available for the first two weeks of the assignment.
• No call required.
• No return to office (RTO) for July 4th holiday.

Required Qualifications

• Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Michigan
• Minimum 2 years of stepdown nursing experience, with at least some experience within the last year
• Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
• Experience administering chemotherapy via IV

Required Documentation & Compliance

• Criminal background check (lifetime search, including SSN trace, national criminal, sex offender, statewide, education verification, and MVR) within 45 days of start.
• E-Verify and I-9 documentation required.
• Government-issued photo ID.
• Education verification (copy of highest degree or diploma).
• Physical exam within 1 year of start.
• Drug testing: 10-panel including Marijuana/THC within 30 days of start.
• Immunizations and health requirements:

  • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (proof of at least one prior Tdap vaccine)
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray as applicable
  • Measles, Mumps, Rubella (2 vaccines or positive titer)
  • Hepatitis B (titer, series, or declination)
  • Varicella (2 vaccines or positive titer)
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved exemption (for candidates starting after November 1)
• Fingerprinting (Michigan LARA) required within 45 days of start for certain positions; process coordinated by compliance team.
• Completion of facility-specific documents including Code of Conduct, Appearance Standards Policy, and vaccine exemption forms if applicable.
• Competency exams and medication/pharmacology competency within 1 year prior to assignment start.

References & Work History

• One professional reference from a supervisor or manager required. Charge nurse references acceptable if direct supervision confirmed.
• Complete employment application/resume with full 7 years of work history, no gaps, dated MM/YYYY (present timeframes acceptable).

• Scheduling flexibility with some self-scheduling options available.
