Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse - CVOR
Location: Newark, New Jersey
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Summary
Seeking a Registered Nurse for the Cardiovascular Operating Room (CVOR) to support a high-acuity, high-volume surgical program involving complex cardiovascular and vascular procedures in a hybrid OR environment.
Schedule & Shift Details
- Shift Hours: 7:00 AM – 7:30 PM
- On-call: 24 hours on Saturdays/Sundays (one weekend per month)
- Additional on-call 8-hour shifts on two weekdays (either 3-11 PM or 11 PM-7 AM)
- Holiday Work: Must work 1 of 2 or 2 of 3 holidays as needed
- Call-off Policy: Facility may call off 1 shift per 2 weeks
- Priority given to schedule requests with proper documentation before offer
- Locals and first-time travelers accepted
Required Experience
- Minimum 2.5 years of Registered Nurse experience
- EPIC charting experience required
Required Licenses & Certifications
- Active New Jersey RN license or Compact license at time of submission
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required
Clinical Skills & Experience
- Work Setting: Cardiovascular Operating Room (CVOR), Hybrid Room
- Roles: Circulating nurse required; scrub nurse preferred
- Cardiovascular Procedures: Valve replacement, Coronary artery bypass graft (CABG), Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR), Aortic aneurysm repair, Dissection, Video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATs)
- Vascular Procedures: Endovascular AAA repair, Carotid endarterectomy, Arteriogram, Angiogram, Transcarotid artery revascularization (TCAR), AV fistula, Femoral popliteal bypass graft
- Transplant Experience: Some transplant experience required; cardiac, lung, and/or kidney transplant experience highly preferred
Unit Details & Floating
- Scrubs provided by hospital
- Floating to Main OR for primarily Orthopedic and General surgery cases
- Additional floating to Laparoscopic, Gynecology, Robotic, Orthopedic/Neuro, Vascular, and Pediatric surgery
Required Documentation & Compliance
- Employment application or resume with 7 years of work history
- Two professional references within the last 2 years (one managerial)
- Background checks including criminal, EPLS/GSA/SAM, HHS/OIG, and state-specific exclusions
- Drug screening within 30 days of start
- Physical exam within 12 months confirming ability to perform essential job functions and free of communicable disease
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray per facility requirements
- Annual influenza vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption
- Fit test and respiratory medical clearance prior to start (mandatory on-site fit testing)
- Color blindness exam if job tasks require color discrimination
- Various competency exams including medication/pharmacology, dysrhythmia/EKG, IV therapy/infusion, and pass/fail testing for EKG/medications
- Skills checklist updated annually
- Facility-specific education and attestation forms required prior to start
Additional Certifications (Preferred/Required as Applicable)
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) – Preferred but not required for CVOR RN
- Other certifications may be required depending on unit assignment (e.g., NIH Stroke Certification, PALS, NRP, Chemotherapy Certification) – confirm with program coordinator if applicable
- IV Certification required for all RNs except OR specialties
- Management of Assaultive Behavior (MAB) required for ER, Pediatric ER, and Behavioral Health RNs only
Requirements/Qualifications
- Valid RN license in New Jersey
- Minimum 2.5 years of Cardiovascular Operating Room (CVOR) experience, including experience within the last year
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Some degree of transplant experience (cardiac, lung, and/or kidney)
- Experience with Epic electronic health record system
Notes
- Prior travel experience is not required; first-time travelers are accepted
- Floating assignments may include a variety of surgical specialties beyond CVOR
- Facility provides scrubs and advanced technology environment
- High-volume, complex cardiovascular and vascular surgical cases
This position offers an opportunity to work in a nationally recognized cardiovascular program with exposure to advanced surgical procedures and multidisciplinary teams.
