Job Opportunity: Cytotechnologist

Location

  • Peoria, Illinois

Job Summary

  • Perform specialized and complex technical tasks screening clinical specimen slides for cancer or other pathological conditions.
  • Mark abnormalities, render diagnoses, and determine cases for quality control or pathologist review.
  • Conduct routine quality control and cellular evaluations for specimen adequacy.
  • Prepare cell samples for microscopic examination.
  • Assist pathologists with fine needle aspiration procedures and determine cellular adequacy in Radiology on thyroid aspirations.
  • Maintain compliance with safety protocols, quality control, and CAP requirements.
  • Use Epic EMR system.

Work Schedule

  • Day shift: Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM
  • 40 hours per week
  • No weekend, holiday, call, or standby requirements

Contract Length

  • 13 weeks

Required Qualifications

  • Certified Cytologist (CT) via ASCP
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (AHA or ARC)
  • Active Illinois license or proof that application process has been initiated
  • Experience in a large hospital setting preferred
  • Must comply with drug-free workplace policy and produce a negative drug screen

Experience

  • Specialty experience requirement: Cytology (years not explicitly stated, assume standard for Cytotechnologist II)

Key Responsibilities

  • Screen and evaluate cellular samples microscopically for abnormalities.
  • Perform quality control reviews and competency checks for junior cytotechnologists.

  • Maintain a clean, safe, and orderly work environment following universal precautions and chemical hygiene plans.
  • Assist in specimen preparation using proper chemicals and laboratory procedures.
  • Document findings and discrepancies accurately.
