Description
Operating Room Surgical Technologist (State College, Pennsylvania) - Contract
Position Summary
- Assist in the delivery of patient care in the Operating Room under supervision of the Nursing Supervisor and circulating nurse.
- Function as a scrub or assist during surgical procedures.
- Follow AORN Standards of Practice, Principles of Asepsis, and Operating Room Policies and Procedures.
- Work closely with physicians, coworkers, and students maintaining a professional attitude.
- Provide patient care with sensitivity to physical, psychological, and spiritual needs, respecting privacy and dignity.
Employment Details
- Employment Type: Contract
- Contract Length: 13 weeks
- Shift: 8-hour shifts, Monday to Friday (06:30–15:00 and/or 09:00–17:30)
- Call opportunity available but not required
- Hours per week: 36
Required Qualifications
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- Surgical Technologist certification.
- Minimum of 2 years of Surgical Technologist experience, including experience within the last year.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of surgical equipment, supplies, and their specific uses.
- Dexterity and strength to handle surgical instruments, assist with patient positioning, and move equipment.
- Proficient in aseptic technique, sterile field setup, gowning, gloving, and surgical scrubbing.
- Ability to anticipate surgeon’s needs to expedite procedures and minimize patient exposure.
- Ability to identify emergency situations and respond calmly and efficiently.
- Familiarity with sterilization methods and operation of sterilizing equipment.
- Ability to perform sharps, sponge, and instrument counts accurately.
- Commitment to teamwork, organization, and continuous learning.
- Adherence to infection control, safety policies, and ethical/legal responsibilities.
Essential Functions
- Prepare and maintain sterile fields and surgical instruments.
- Assist with skin preparation, draping, and medication handling under RN supervision.
- Clean and sterilize instruments and equipment according to safety protocols.
- Perform morning checks and prepare case carts for surgeries.
- Report faulty equipment and complete documentation for unusual occurrences.
- Support a safe, efficient, and cost-conscious surgical environment.
