Certified Surgical First Assistant - Travel/Contract
Location: Olney, Maryland
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Details
- Position: Certified Surgical First Assistant (Surgical Services specialty)
- Shift: 3x12 hour day shifts (06:45 AM – 06:45 PM)
- Hours per week: 36 hours
- Call requirement: Up to 12 hours per week (Monday-Friday 7 PM – 7 AM) plus 12 hours weekend call (Friday-Sunday 7 PM – 7 PM)
- Weekend shifts: 2 twelve-hour weekend shifts per 12-week schedule
- Holiday requirement: Every other holiday required
- Float requirement: Must float to Labor & Delivery/OB for repeat operations and C-sections
Required Qualifications
- Minimum 2 years of experience as a Surgical First Assistant, including experience within the last year
- NBSTSA (National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting) certification required
- BLS (Basic Life Support) certification required (AHA or ARC)
- Experience with Mako surgical system required
- Experience with DaVinci surgical system required
Licensure & Certifications
- Valid surgical first assistant certification (NBSTSA) required prior to start
- BLS certification current and valid
- Additional certifications may be required based on unit specifics (e.g., ACLS, PALS, NRP) but not explicitly stated for this role
Compliance & Documentation Requirements
- Criminal background check within 90 days of start, covering all locations lived/worked/schooled in past 7 years
- Drug screen within 90 days of start (excluding marijuana), including multiple substances
- Annual physical exam confirming ability to perform job duties without accommodations and free from communicable disease
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year; if history of TB, additional documentation required
- Immunization documentation required for:
- Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (within 10 years preferred)
- Measles, Mumps, Rubella (2 MMR vaccines or positive titer)
- Varicella (2 vaccines or positive titer)
- Hepatitis B (titer, series, or signed declination)
- Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required during flu season (Sept-Mar)
- Valid state license verification prior to start
- I9 and E-Verify attestation required upon hire
- Completion of facility-specific orientation modules prior to start
- Photo for badge with specific requirements (clear, centered, no glare, solid background)
Experience & References
- Must provide two positive supervisory references supporting at least 2 years of experience within the last 3 years
- Complete 7 years of work history with no gaps, including education, employment, license, and contact information
- Skills checklist required prior to start and updated annually
Additional Job Requirements
- Must be able to work call shifts as scheduled
- Must be willing and able to float to Labor & Delivery/OB for specific procedures
- Must comply with all facility-specific policies and training requirements
This position is ideal for experienced Certified Surgical First Assistants with prior travel contract experience who are comfortable with advanced surgical technologies and flexible scheduling including call and holiday coverage.
