Description

Job Opportunity: Surgical Room Nurse

Position Details

  • Employment Type: Contractor
  • Contract Length: 13 weeks
  • Shift: 8-hour evening shift (typically 1445-1915)
  • Hours per Week: 40
  • Schedule:
    • Weekend rotation every 4th weekend (Saturday-Sunday)
    • Various shift options including 12-hour and 8-hour shifts
    • Schedule is rotation-based; no self-scheduling
    • Operating Room (OR) open 24/7, 365 days/year
    • OR hours: Monday-Friday 0730-2300; after 2300 skeleton crew for trauma/urgent cases
    • Weekend hours: Saturday-Sunday 0700-1700; after 1700 skeleton crew for trauma/urgent cases
    • Holiday coverage required
    • On-call duties may be required with a 30-minute response time; sleeping room available for on-call staff

Unit and Patient Information

  • Unit Beds: 28 (including 2 hybrid rooms for cardiovascular/vascular cases)
  • Average Cases per Day: Approximately 60-75
  • Patient Types: Outpatient, inpatient, trauma
  • Common Diagnoses and Procedures:
    • Gunshot wounds, stabbings, kidney and heart transplants, donor cases
    • General surgery, gynecology, urology, robotics, vascular, orthopedic, neurology
    • Open heart surgeries including CABG (coronary artery bypass graft)
    • Hybrid room cases (5-10 per day): TAVR, AAA repairs, endarterectomies, angiograms, fistula revisions (adults only)
    • Pediatric cases (~20%): open hearts, appendectomy, cholecystectomy
    • No liver or lung transplants
    • Participation in organ donation cases ("Gifts of Hope")

Required Experience

  • Minimum 3 years of acute care experience (or 3 years hybrid experience if applying as IR Hybrid Tech)
  • First-time travelers are accepted (prior travel experience not required)

Required Licenses and Certifications (Based on Role)

  • OR/CVOR Registered Nurse: BLS certification required
  • Surgical Technician: BLS and CST certifications required
  • Hybrid IR Technician: BLS and ARRT certifications required
  • Surgical Assistant: BLS and CSA certifications required

Skills and Competencies

  • OR RN: Ability to scrub and circulate; critical care experience preferred; trauma experience at Level 1-2; EPIC electronic medical record experience required
  • CVOR RN: Ability to scrub and circulate adult or pediatric open-heart cases; critical care and Level 1 trauma experience; EPIC experience required
  • CST: Ability to scrub the specified cases
  • CVOR Tech: Ability to scrub adult or pediatric open-heart cases
  • Hybrid IR Tech: Experience with hybrid patient types and Siemens equipment required

  • Charge nurse available (no patient assignment Monday-Friday; assists on weekends and evenings)

  • Days 2-3: Unit orientation
