Operating Room Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Position
Location: Columbus, Ohio
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Overview
- Work in an 18-bed Level 1 Trauma Operating Room.
- Surgical specialties include General, Robotic, Laparoscopic, Trauma, Orthopedic, Neurosurgery, Spine, Ophthalmology, ENT, Plastics, Burns, Urology, GYN, and Transplant.
- Variable shifts: days/evenings, 8, 10, or 12-hour shifts.
- Call required Monday-Friday 9:00 PM to 6:30 AM; weekend and holiday coverage may be required.
- Primary focus on circulating in Orthopedic, Neurosurgery, Spine, and General Surgery cases.
- Maintain patient records using EPIC.
Required Qualifications
- Valid RN license in Ohio.
- Minimum 2 years of Operating Room (OR) experience, including experience within the last year.
- Experience working with Level 1 Trauma patients.
- BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association.
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
- Experience with EPIC electronic medical records system.
Preferred Experience
- Experience with ENT, Genitourinary (GU), Plastics, and Burns cases.
Certifications & Competencies
- BLS (Basic Life Support) - AHA Provider or Instructor level required.
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) may be required depending on unit assignment.
- Dysrhythmia/EKG Competency Exam required within 1 year of start and updated annually (minimum passing score 76%).
- Medication/Pharmacology Competency Exam required prior to start.
- Unit-specific competency exams required.
- Orientation Safety Manual Acknowledgement required annually.
- State RN license verification and NURSYS verification required within 30 days of start.
- Additional certifications (e.g., PALS, NRP, EFM, NIH Stroke Certification) may be required depending on unit assignment.
Background & Screening Requirements
- 7-year criminal background check within 90 days of start, including FBI and BCI fingerprinting with specific Ohio codes.
- Monthly EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG monitoring.
- Education accreditation confirmation from an accredited nursing program (CCNE, ACEN, or NLN CNEA).
- Proof of diploma or official transcripts required.
- Pending background check attestation required if fingerprint results are pending.
- Drug screening: Negative 10-panel drug test within 3 months of start (includes amphetamines, barbiturates, benzodiazepines, cannabinoids, cocaine, methadone, methaqualone, opiates, PCP, propoxyphene). New travelers cannot start with drug screen pending.
- Two professional references required, including at least one from a manager or formal leadership.
Health & Immunization Requirements
- Physical exam within 1 year of start confirming good health and free of contagious disease.
- Tdap vaccine (adult dose after age 11/12) required; exemptions not allowed for those working with infants or pregnant patients.
- Negative TB test (PPD, QGold, or TSPOT) within 1 year or chest x-ray if positive. TB questionnaire required annually in lieu of TB test.
- MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella): 2 vaccines or positive titer required; boosters required if low titer and no proof of vaccines. Titers must be drawn 28+ days after last booster.
- Varicella: 2 vaccines or positive titer required unless medically exempted with documentation. Boosters required if low titer and no proof of vaccines.
- Hepatitis B: Titer or 3-vaccine series required; signed declination acceptable.
- Seasonal flu vaccination or declination required during flu season (Oct 1 - Mar 31); decliners must wear a mask.
- COVID-19 vaccination not required but strongly recommended; proof of primary vaccination should be collected if available.
Additional Facility-Specific Requirements
- Dress code and hand hygiene policy acknowledgment required.
- Confidential Fraud, Waste, Abuse, and Compliance Reporting Mechanism form required.
- Fraud, Waste, and Abuse training certificate required prior to start and updated annually.
- Ethics and compliance policies must be reviewed and acknowledged annually.
- Employment application and skills checklist required.
- Proof of fingerprint completion required for subcontractors.
Shift Details
- Typical shift example: Day shift, 4 days per week, 10 hours per day (6:30 AM to 5:00 PM).
- Call coverage required as noted above.
This position is ideal for experienced OR RNs with trauma center experience seeking a travel contract in a high-acuity surgical environment.
