Description
Registered Nurse First Assistant (RNFA) - Travel/Contract
Location: Kalamazoo, Michigan
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Summary
- Must be able to independently and proficiently harvest veins endoscopically in a Cardiovascular Operating Room (CVOR) setting.
- Scrub role required.
- Must have experience with 3s or 4s in vein harvesting and cardiac areas.
- Float coverage required for general department First Assistant (FA) duties including ortho, vascular, gynecology, thoracic, and general surgeries when cardiac cases are not applicable.
- Call requirement: 12-18 days per month.
- Weekend requirement: 2-3 weekends per month.
- Shift: Day shift, 4 days a week, 10 hours per day (7:00 AM - 5:30 PM).
- Guaranteed 40 hours per week.
- ASAP start desired (early May).
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Michigan.
- Minimum 5 years of Cardiovascular Operating Room (CVOR) First Assist experience, including experience within the last year.
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
- Proficient in NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS).
- Demonstrated ability to independently scrub and perform endoscopic vein harvesting in a CVOR setting.
Certifications & Competencies
- Basic Life Support (BLS) - AHA only.
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) - AHA only.
- Orientation Safety Manual Acknowledgement required.
- Medication Test/Pharmacology Competency Exam completed within 1 year prior to assignment start with a passing score of at least 80%.
- Competency Exam in specialty completed within 1 year prior to assignment start with a passing score of at least 80%.
Background & Compliance Requirements
- Criminal background check within 45 days of start, including lifetime search from age 18, SSN trace, national criminal and sex offender searches, statewide searches, education verification, and motor vehicle record (MVR) search.
- Monthly EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required.
- Michigan LARA fingerprinting required within 45 days of start for certain positions; fingerprinting process coordinated via consent form.
- Michigan Central Registry Clearance required for pediatric and certain specialty placements (not specifically applicable here unless assigned).
- Education verification required (copy of highest degree or diploma acceptable).
- Complete application/resume with full 7 years work history, no gaps, dated MM/YYYY.
- One professional reference from a supervisor or manager required.
Health & Immunization Requirements
- Physical exam within 1 year of start.
- Negative TB test (PPD or Q Gold/T-Spot) within 30 days of start; if positive, chest x-ray within 180 days and annual TB questionnaire required.
- Proof of Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap vaccine (at least one prior Tdap).
- Proof of Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella, and Varicella immunity via 2 vaccines or positive titer; exemptions not accepted.
- Hepatitis B titer, series, or documented declination required.
- 10-panel drug test including Marijuana/THC within 30 days of start; instant/rapid tests acceptable if meeting criteria.
- Seasonal flu vaccination required for candidates starting after November 1, or approved medical/spiritual exemption submitted within 48 hours of contract signing.
Facility Policies & Additional Requirements
- Review and sign Code of Conduct and Appearance Standards Policy prior to start.
- Fit testing required on-site for applicable roles; appointment must be scheduled and documented.
- Vaccine exemption forms required if declining influenza or other vaccines, with approval process that may take time.
- Personal or auto insurance required only for Home Health roles (not applicable here).
Summary
This is a 13-week travel contract for an experienced RNFA with strong cardiovascular OR and vein harvesting skills. The role requires independent scrubbing, float coverage flexibility, and adherence to strict background, health, and compliance standards. Prior travel experience and a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience are strongly preferred. The position offers a day shift schedule with call and weekend requirements.
