Description

Travel Registered Nurse – Neuro ICU

Location: Charlotte, North Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Summary

Seeking a Registered Nurse with strong Neuro ICU experience to provide care in a comprehensive stroke center. The patient population primarily includes stroke patients (ischemic, hemorrhagic), craniotomies, carotid stents, aneurysm coiling/clipping, seizures, and other neuro critical care cases.


Required Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in North Carolina
  • Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
  • Minimum 2 years of Neuro ICU experience, with Neuro ICU experience within the last year
  • One completed travel assignment
  • ACLS issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
  • BLS issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
  • Interpretation and management of dysrhythmias
  • Central line care/management
  • Continuous IV sedation
  • CVA/Acute Stroke management
  • External ventricular drains (EVD) and intracranial pressure (ICP) monitoring
  • Post-neurosurgery management
  • Care of ventilated patients
  • Lumbar drain experience

Shift & Schedule

  • Shift: Night shift, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (18:45 – 07:15)
  • Hours per week: 36 hours
  • Patient Ratios: Typically 2:1, may flex to 3:1 during high census
  • Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
  • Float Requirement: Yes
  • Call Requirement: None

Unit & Patient Details

  • Comprehensive Stroke Center with an average daily census of 11-12 patients
  • Patient diagnoses include ischemic and hemorrhagic strokes (SAH), subdural hematomas, craniotomies, carotid procedures, aneurysm treatments, seizures, myasthenia gravis, and use of drains such as EVDs, lumbar drains, hemovacs, and ICP monitoring devices (Camino)
  • Special equipment includes EVD, Lumbar Drains, Camino, LICOX, NICOM, and Arctic Sun
  • Unit systems: Pyxis, EPIC, SBAR

Orientation & Onboarding

  • Unit orientation: 24 hours (2 days or 2 nights)
  • Must pass EKG testing prior to start
  • Photo ID and badge photo required before start (passport-style photo on white background, business attire)
  • Must complete facility-specific education and compliance training modules prior to or shortly after start
  • Required background checks and verifications must be current (within 6 months for clinical candidates)
  • Drug screening within 6 months of start required
  • Immunizations and health documents required: TB test or chest x-ray, MMR (measles, mumps, rubella), Hepatitis B, Varicella, seasonal flu vaccination or approved exemption
  • Must complete medication safety training and other facility-specific mandatory education

Important Notes

  • No Return to Origin (RTO) allowed after booking; call-offs or additional RTO may result in cancellation
  • Strong neuro critical care experience is mandatory; candidates without 2 years in Neuro ICU should not be submitted
  • Candidates must be comfortable with flexible patient ratios and floating to other units as needed
  • Flu vaccination or approved exemption required during flu season
  • Candidates must complete all required competency exams and certifications as outlined

This position is ideal for experienced Neuro ICU RNs with prior travel assignments who are comfortable working night shifts in a high-acuity stroke center environment.
