Description

Registered Nurse - Medical Surgical (Travel/Contract)

Location: Indianapolis, Indiana
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Night (3 shifts per week, 12 hours each, 7:00 PM - 7:30 AM)
Hours per Week: 36


Unit & Work Environment

  • Ortho/Trauma med/surg unit with approximately 20% ortho patients (hip and knee surgeries) and trauma patients (motor vehicle accidents, shootings, stabbings, falls, emergent surgeries, ICU transfers).
  • High acuity, fast-paced environment requiring strong teamwork and communication skills.
  • Staffing ratios typically 1:5-6.
  • Travelers may be required to float to different levels of care including Med-Surg, PCU, and ICU with resources provided.
  • Weekend flexibility required: travelers must be able to work 50% of weekends during the contract, based on unit needs.
  • Teaching facility: travelers must be willing to precept or have students shadow them.
  • Charge nurse responsibilities may be required depending on operational needs, with training and resources provided.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Indiana
  • Minimum 2 years of Medical-Surgical nursing experience, with at least some experience within the last year
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)

Health & Compliance Requirements

  • Physical exam completed within 12 months of start date.
  • Negative 10-panel drug screen within 12 months (including amphetamines, marijuana, cocaine, opiates, PCP).
  • Tuberculosis screening (PPD, QuantiFERON-TB Gold, or T-SPOT) within 1 year of start date; if positive, chest X-ray and documentation required.
  • Immunizations/vaccinations required or proof of immunity:
    • Rubeola (Measles) - positive titer or 2 vaccines (no declinations accepted)
    • Mumps - positive titer or 2 vaccines (no declinations accepted)
    • Rubella - positive titer or 2 vaccines (no declinations accepted)
    • Varicella - positive titer or 2 vaccines (no declinations accepted; history not accepted)
    • Hepatitis B series, titer, or signed declination required
    • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap preferred but not required
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required during flu season (9/30 - 3/31); declinations not accepted.
  • Fit mask test within 12 months with approved respirators (3M N95 models or Honeywell N95); on-site fit testing available only as last resort at this facility.
  • Color blindness exam (Ishihara or equivalent) with 100% minimum score required.
  • Background checks including 7-year history, EPLS/GSA/SAM, HHS/OIG required within specified timeframes.
  • Education verification and transcript/diploma required.
  • Skills checklist and competency exams required annually and prior to start.
  • References: Minimum 2 references from recent employment verified within 2 years; references must be from charge, manager, supervisor, or above.

Additional Notes

  • Call-in policy: If a traveler calls in for a contracted shift, they must make up the day during the pay period if 0.9 FTE; otherwise, shifts will be added to the end of the contract. For 1.2 FTE, call-in shifts are added to the end of the contract.
  • Effective 11/30/2024, Indiana RNs are generally not allowed to work at this facility except for Perioperative/OR RNs, Allied, and Ambulatory RNs (including Endoscopy, IR, PACU, Cath Lab, SDS).
  • Valid driver’s license or passport required for credentialing purposes.
  • Completion of facility-specific orientation, compliance, confidentiality, and safety modules required prior to start.
  • Must complete mandatory training modules if applicable (e.g., RRT candidates).

This position is ideal for experienced Registered Nurses comfortable working in a high-acuity ortho/trauma med/surg setting with flexibility for weekends, floating, and precepting responsibilities.
