Description
Registered Nurse (Stepdown Care Unit) - Illinois, Peoria
Job Details
- Specialty: Stepdown Care Unit (Intermediate Care/ICU level)
- Shift: Nights (7 PM - 7 AM)
- Shift Length: 12-hour shifts
- Hours per Week: 36
- Contract Length: 13 weeks
- Patient Ratio: 3:1 nurse-to-patient ratio
- Unit Size: 20 beds (8 private, remainder semi-private)
- Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend (Fri/Sat night shift, Sat/Sun day shift)
- Holiday Requirement: Every other major holiday rotation, with companion day off
Unit & Patient Care
- Care for patients with a wide range of medical conditions including COPD, CHF, diabetes, sepsis, renal issues, DKA, alcohol withdrawal, overdoses, pneumonia, respiratory conditions, some neuro/surgical/cardiac cases
- Frequent care of tracheostomy and ventilated patients (Bipap, Cpap, face mask ventilator, trachs, trached patients on ventilators)
- Common equipment: chest tubes, G tubes, NG tubes, PICC lines, central lines
- Telemetry monitors: Phillips bedside monitors; Tele/Monitor Techs interpret strips, RNs confirm readings
- Drip titration required for Cardene, Cardizem, Amiodarone, Dobutamine, Heparin, and low-dose/infrequent vasopressors
- Charge nurse present on each shift (usually does not take patient assignment unless staffing is low)
- House supervisor available 24/7
- Two patient care technicians (PCTs) per shift, each caring for up to 10 patients when unit is full
Required Qualifications
- Active Illinois RN license or proof that application process has been initiated
- BLS (Basic Life Support) certification required
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support) certification recommended
- ICU or Intermediate (Stepdown) nursing experience required; Progressive care or telemetry experience alone is not sufficient
- Must have experience with tracheostomy and ventilator care
- Experience with nurse-to-patient ratios of 3:1 or 2:1 in ICU/Intermediate care
- Ability to titrate drips as listed above
Orientation & Scheduling
- Orientation includes 1 day EPIC training, 1 day unit orientation with educator, and 1 day floor training with RN
- Travel RNs collaborate with unit supervisor on scheduling; block scheduling is encouraged
- Travel RNs are first to float; may float to ICU (if experienced), other Stepdown units, or General Medicine
- Floating patient assignments: ICU (2 patients), Stepdown (3 patients), General Medicine (5-6 patients)

- Local placements accepted within a 50-mile radius
- Drug-free campus policy; negative drug screen required for all panels
- No call or standby requirements
- Dress code: any scrub color allowed
