• Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend (Saturday and Sunday)
• Holiday Requirement: Rotate every other holiday
• Scheduling: Block scheduling considered with prior approval; travelers do not self-schedule
• Floating: Travelers float first, only to units matching their experience level; ICU RNs floating to general units take a team of 3 patients
• Orientation: 2 shifts with preceptor plus one 12-hour shift for EPIC, professional orientation, and unit educator

Unit Information

• Department: Surgical Acute
• Beds: 63 total (49 private, 9 observation)
• Nurse-to-Patient Ratios:

  • Day: 1 RN per 4-5 patients
  • Night: 1 RN per 5-6 patients
• Patient Types: Post-op surgical, trauma, overflow medical
• Common Care Tasks: Dressing changes, wound care, IV therapy, pain management, drains, NG tubes, central lines, TPN
• Respiratory Equipment: No ventilators; CPAP and high flow oxygen managed by RNs; RT manages nebulizers; RNs manage inhalers and CPAP placement
• Telemetry: Some patients on telemetry with Phillips monitors; bedside RNs do not read strips, monitor techs handle central monitoring
• Charge Nurse & House Supervisor: Charge nurses do not take patient assignments (2 charge RNs per shift); house supervisor available 24/7
• Patient Care Techs (PCTs):

  • Day: 1 PCT per 7-10 patients
  • Night: 1 PCT per 10-15 patients
  • Duties: Vitals, accu checks, ADLs, turning, ambulation

Required Qualifications

• Active Illinois RN license or proof that application process has been initiated
• BLS (AHA) certification
• Negative drug screen (drug-free campus policy)
• Experience: Post-op patient care, critical thinking, good bedside manner, team player
• No requirement for RNs to titrate drips except Heparin only

Additional Notes

• Local placements accepted within a 50-mile radius
• Call Off Policy: Equivalent of 12 hours off every 13 weeks with no penalty or pay requirement
• Orientation hours (12 hours) are non-billable and guaranteed hours do not apply during orientation
• Scrub Color/Dress Code: Any color allowed; scrubs not provided
