Description
Respiratory Therapist - Contract Position
Job Details
- Employment Type: Contractor
- Contract Length: 13 weeks
- Shift: 12-hour shifts (either 05:00-17:00 or 17:00-05:00)
- Hours per Week: 36
- Weekend Rotation: Every 3rd weekend
- Holiday Expectations: 1 summer holiday, 1 winter holiday
- Schedule Cycle: 8 weeks at a time, schedule provided 3 weeks in advance
- On Call: No call required
- Orientation: 2-3 days up to a week depending on comfort level
Work Environment
- ICU (CCU) stepdown/ICU combined with 2-5 ventilated patients daily between ED and ICU
- Inpatient cardiac unit (no open heart surgeries)
- Medical-surgical units
- Inpatient behavioral health unit
- Floating throughout the hospital to all units
- Very busy Emergency Department with a high pediatric population (peds patients may board in ED or be transferred out)
Patient Types / Common Diagnoses
- COVID-19
- COPD
- Alcohol detoxification (ETOH detox)
- Overdose patients
- ARDS
- Pneumonia
- Influenza
- Congestive heart failure (CHF)
- Lung cancer
- Stroke
- RSV
- Tracheostomy patients, including those on ventilators
Patient Ratios
- 1:1 patient care ratio
Required Qualifications
- Licensure: Must hold a valid Respiratory Therapist license
- Certifications: BLS, ACLS, PALS required; NRP preferred
- Preferred Credentials: Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) highly preferred; will accept Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT)
- Experience: Minimum 1 year of respiratory therapy experience required
- Prior Travel Experience: Not required; first-time travelers accepted
Skills and Competencies
- Arterial blood gas (ABG) punctures
- Airway and ventilator management
- Administration of inhaled medications (MDI and nebulizer)
- Code blue response
- EKG interpretation (up to 10 per shift)
- Pediatric and NICU experience preferred but not required; NRP certification required to float to NICU/Peds units
Department Support
- 2 respiratory therapists on night shifts
- 3 respiratory therapists on day shifts
- Charge therapist assigned every shift (lighter assignments possible if charge)
- Respiratory therapist educator available
- Manager on site during day shifts
Technology and Equipment
- Electronic Medical Record system: EPIC
- Ventilators and respiratory devices including:
- Hamilton C1 (noninvasive, invasive, and high flow)
- Airvo (high flow)
- Servo-U ventilators for all vented patients
Additional Information
- Scrub color: Any professional color allowed; cartoons and t-shirts permitted
