Description
Medical Surgical Registered Nurse - Travel/Contract
Location: Kalamazoo, Michigan
Shift: Night (3 shifts per week, 12 hours each; 7:00 PM - 7:30 AM)
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Unit Overview
- 40-bed medical-surgical unit specializing in neurological disorders (Stroke, Epilepsy, Multiple Sclerosis, inflammatory brain/spinal cord disorders)
- Large spinal surgery population including post-op neuro, ortho, laminectomy, and spinal fusion patients
- Includes six step-down/telemetry beds and six bariatric beds
- Four-bed Neuro Monitoring Unit for seizure patients starting at age 5
Work Schedule & Environment
- 36 or 48 hour weeks available (indicate preference on application)
- Every other weekend required
- No holiday time off requests allowed; dates may be discussed with manager based on unit needs
- Nurse-to-patient ratio typically 1:4 or 1:5
- May be asked to float to other Med/Surg units, ICU units, and ED waiting rooms
- Equipment used: EPIC electronic health record, Pyxis medication dispensing system
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Michigan
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Minimum of 1 year of medical-surgical nursing experience within the last year
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification or willingness to complete prior to start
Certifications & Competencies
- Medication/Pharmacology Competency Exam completed within 1 year prior to assignment start, with a passing score of at least 80%
- Annual completion of competency exam in specialty with passing score of at least 80%
- Orientation Safety Manual Acknowledgement required
- Additional certifications may be required based on unit assignment (e.g., ACLS, TNCC) — verify with unit description
Health & Background Requirements
- Physical exam within 1 year of start date
- Negative TB test (PPD or Q Gold/T-Spot) within 30 days of start; if positive, chest x-ray and TB questionnaire required
- Annual TB questionnaire update required
- Proof of immunizations or positive titers for:
- Rubeola (Measles)
- Mumps
- Rubella
- Varicella
- Hepatitis B (titer, series, or documented declination)
- Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (at least one prior Tdap vaccine)
- Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/spiritual exemption required for candidates starting after November 1; proof or exemption must be submitted by December 1
- 10-panel drug screen including Marijuana/THC within 30 days of start (instant/rapid acceptable if full panel)
- Fit mask testing required on-site (Honeywell DC365N95HC) for applicable roles; appointment must be scheduled and documented prior to start
Background & Compliance
- Criminal background check within 45 days of start, including lifetime search from age 18, SSN trace, national/statewide searches, education verification, and motor vehicle record (MVR) search
- Monthly EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required
- Michigan fingerprinting required within 45 days of start for certain positions (not applicable for this role unless specified)
- Michigan Central Registry Clearance required for pediatric placements and certain specialties (not applicable unless working in those areas)
- Complete employment application/resume with full 7 years work history, no gaps (month/year format acceptable)
- One professional reference from a supervisor or manager required
Additional Notes
- Locals within 50 miles may be accepted at a different rate (not disclosed here)
- Candidates must comply with facility appearance standards and code of conduct policies prior to start
- May be required to complete additional facility-specific documents such as vaccine exemption forms if applicable
