Description
Registered Nurse - MS/Tele (Travel/Contract)
Location: Wilmington, North Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Night (3 shifts of 12 hours; 18:45 - 7:15)
Hours per Week: 36
Job Summary
- Position in the ED Holding unit within the Emergency Department float pool.
- Patients are adults with medical/surgical diagnoses, including PCU level patients.
- Responsibilities include caring for MS/Telemetry patients and floating to ED and MedSurg areas as needed.
- Target nurse-to-patient ratios: 1:6 for MS/Tele patients, 1:4 for PCU level patients.
- Every other weekend required.
- Maximum of 7 days RTO (Return to Office) allowed after booking; no RTO can be worked out onsite.
- Contract staff may be assigned to Storm/Hurricane Teams and required to work during catastrophic events or disasters.
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in North Carolina
- Minimum 1 year of recent experience in Medical-Surgical and Telemetry nursing
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- BLS certification issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
- ACLS certification issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
- Experience with use of Rapid Response Teams
- Phlebotomy skills
- PICC line management
- Chest tube management (Emerson/Pleur-evac)
- High Flow Nasal Cannula (HFNC) management
- Tracheostomy management
Preferred Qualifications
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
- IV insulin protocols
- Pre/Post hemodialysis management
- Accessing ports and central line blood draws
- Starting IVs
- Experience with CVA, neuro surgery, spinal cord injuries, traumatic brain injury
- Ortho trauma and total joint replacements
- Wound care and wound vac
Orientation & Unit Details
- Unit orientation: 12 hours
- Unit uses Pyxis, Epic, and SBAR communication tools
- Scrubs color: Navy
- ED Holding unit is an inpatient holding area within the Emergency Department
- Standard equipment includes cardiac monitors and IV pumps
Background & Compliance Requirements
- Background checks required within 90 days of start, including local county, federal court, national criminal database, DOJ sex offender search, and education verification for highest degree earned.
- North Carolina Healthcare Personnel Registry and Division of Medical Assistance searches required within 90 days prior to start.
- Drug screening: Negative 10-panel drug screen within 30 days of start.
- Physical exam within 1 year of start; if past positive TB, physical within 30 days required.
- Fit testing for N95 mask or completion of PAPR training required within 1 year of start.
- Immunizations and titers required:
- Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella (titer or 2 vaccines with boosters if negative)
- Hepatitis B titer or series or facility-specific declination form
- Flu vaccine or approved medical/religious exemption required during flu season (9/1 - 10/31). Approved exemptions require mask wearing on campus.
- TB testing: PPD, Qgold, or Tspot within 1 year; if positive, chest x-ray within 5 years and physician-signed TB questionnaire within 30 days of start.
Additional Training & Documentation
- Must complete Non-Novant Health Worker Clinical Education Checklist (for NC travel candidates).
- Annual compliance training and medication safety training required.
- Medication test/pharmacology competency exam as applicable.
- Color blindness testing within 1 year required.
- Employment application and references required per Aya Healthcare standards.
- Confidentiality agreement, hospital policies acknowledgment, and tobacco-free campus acknowledgment required.
- Candidates must upload a passport-style photo on a white background for badge creation.
- Candidates must complete Corp ID and I-Learn account setup prior to start.
Scheduling & Work Conditions
- Manager schedules shifts.
- Night shift only, 36 hours per week.
- Floating between ED Holding, ED, MedSurg, and PCU level patients expected.
- High acuity, mixed patient population with high turnover.
- Storm/Hurricane team participation required during catastrophic events.

- Candidates will be interviewed due to high turnover rate.
- Must pass EKG testing prior to start.
- RTO after booking is not allowed and may result in cancellation.
