Job Opportunity: Oncology Chemo Certified Registered Nurse

Location: Wilmington, North Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Nights (3 shifts per week, 12 hours each, 18:45 - 7:15)
Patient Population: Primarily medical-surgical patients with oncology history


Job Description

  • Work on a Medical-Surgical/Oncology unit with a daily census of approximately 42 patients.
  • Target nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:6 (may increase during high census).
  • Responsibilities include administration of chemotherapy/biotherapy (IV, PO, injection).
  • Patient diagnoses include AKI, sepsis, cancer, septic shock, pain management, overdose, malignant neoplasms, ARF, encephalopathy, diabetic foot ulcers, and management of heparin drips.
  • Special procedures and care include colostomy care, accessing ports, blood product administration, central and peripheral line care, PICC line management, surgical drains, chest tubes (Emerson/Pleur-evac), nasal cannula, non-invasive airway management, isolation precautions, wound care including wound vac.
  • Floating required to similar units and alternate inpatient holding locations such as ED inpatient holding.
  • Call required if called off on a prescheduled shift.
  • Every other weekend required.
  • Contract staff expected to participate in Storm Team and/or Hurricane Team assignments and may be required to report during catastrophic events or disasters.
  • Attendance at monthly staff meetings is required.
  • Scrubs: Navy blue and white.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in North Carolina.
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
  • Minimum 1 year of Hematology/Oncology experience within the last year.
  • Medical-Surgical nursing experience in an inpatient setting.
  • Chemotherapy certification (CHEMO) required.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association or American Red Cross.
  • Experience with accessing ports, peripheral line care/management, PICC line management, and chest tubes (Emerson/Pleur-evac).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) certification.
  • Charge nurse experience.
  • Oncology Certified Nurse (OCN) credential.

Orientation & Training

  • Unit orientation: 24 hours (2 shifts).
  • Must complete facility-specific education modules including medication safety and non-Novant health worker orientation (approx. 8-10 hours for acute candidates).
  • Must complete annual compliance and facility-specific mandatory education.
  • Must complete Epic training as required (test-out option not available for this facility).

Compliance & Health Requirements

  • Background check within 6 months required.
  • Drug screening (9-panel) within 6 months required.
  • Immunizations and health screenings required:
    • Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 1 year (or proof of past positive with appropriate documentation).
    • Rubeola (measles) titer or 2 vaccines; boosters required if titer negative/equivocal.
    • Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella per standard protocols.
    • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required during flu season.
  • Physical exam not required for this crisis profile.
  • Must complete medication safety training and other facility-specific compliance forms prior to start.

Additional Information

  • No call-offs or additional RTO (released time off) allowed after booking; call-offs may result in cancellation.
  • Shifts called out must be made up.
  • Photo for badge required immediately after signing contract (passport-style photo on white background, business attire).
  • Must complete corporate ID setup and log into required learning platform within 24 hours of receiving credentials to avoid start delays.
  • Must comply with hospital policies and confidentiality agreements.

This position offers a challenging and rewarding opportunity to work with oncology patients in a fast-paced inpatient setting during night shifts. Candidates must be chemo certified and prepared to provide comprehensive Med/Surg and oncology nursing care.
