Description
Registered Nurse - Travel/Contract
Location: Winston Salem, North Carolina
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Summary
- Night shift (12-hour shifts), typically 4 shifts per week (36 or 48 hours offered)
- Patient population includes Orthopedic, Neuro spine, Med-surg, and Post-surgical patients
- Fast-paced unit focused on orthopedic and spine patients requiring attentive pain management
- Average daily census: 37 patients; 39 beds/rooms
- Nurse-to-patient ratio: typically 5-6:1, can flex to 7:1 in extreme cases
- Float requirement: Must float to other med-surg units as needed
- Weekend requirement: Every other weekend; missed weekend shifts must be made up on a weekend
- Block scheduling options available (e.g., Fri/Sat/Sun or Sat/Sun/Mon)
- No Return to Office (RTO) allowed after booking or onsite; no holiday RTO approved
Required Qualifications
- Valid RN license in North Carolina
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) / Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Minimum 2 years of Med Surg / Telemetry experience, including experience within the last year
- Orthopedic (ortho) work experience required
- BLS certification issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
Preferred Qualifications
- ACLS certification
- Charge nurse experience
- Level I Trauma experience
Patient Diagnoses & Unit Details
- Orthopedic and neuro spine patients
- Med-surgical and post-surgical patients
- COVID-19 patients are no longer cohorted; cared for on all units unless in ICU
Compliance & Documentation Requirements
- Background check within 6 months for clinical candidates
- Drug screening (9-panel) within 6 months of start
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year of start (or proof of past positive TB with appropriate documentation)
- Required immunizations or titers: Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella
- Flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required during flu season (9/1–10/31)
- Physical exam required for travel candidates (not applicable to advanced practice nurses)
- Color blindness testing within 1 year
- Medication safety training certificate required
- Competency exams and skills checklist as per travel requirements
- Photo for badge (passport style, white background, business attire) required immediately after signing contract
- Confidentiality agreement, hospital policies acknowledgment, and other facility-specific documents required
Orientation & Training
- Must complete Non-Novant Health Worker Clinical Education Orientation (8-10 hours for acute candidates)
- Must complete annual compliance and mandatory education training
- Must complete Medication Safety module and submit certificate of completion
- Must complete Corporate ID setup and I-Learn login within 24 hours of receiving credentials
- Optional EPIC test-out available for experienced EPIC users to start earlier onsite

- No holiday time off allowed
- 7 days maximum RTO allowed for auto-offer cancellations
- Candidates must be prepared for a fast-paced environment with orthopedic and spine patient care focus
- Must be flexible and able to adapt to floating and weekend requirements
