Description
Travel Registered Nurse – Medical Surgical
Location: Wilmington, North Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Summary
- Provide nursing care on a Medical Surgical unit with Telemetry remote monitoring.
- Patient diagnoses include dementia, diabetes, COVID, pneumonia, COPD, sepsis, encephalopathy, GI bleed, anemia, hip fracture, and typical medical/surgical cases.
- Unit includes isolation area for COVID patients and multi-level care including stepdown (staffed by stepdown nurses).
- Target nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:5-6.
- Shift: 12-hour night shifts (18:45–7:15), 36 or 48 hours per week accepted.
- Floating between units required.
- Weekend shifts: 12-16 per contract.
- Must participate in Storm/Hurricane Team and may be required to work during catastrophic events or disasters.
- Orientation: 24 hours unit orientation plus hospital orientation week one with mandatory daily classes.
- Scrubs: Navy or white.
- Must pass EKG competency testing prior to start.
Required Skills & Experience
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in North Carolina
- Minimum 2 years of Medical Surgical and Telemetry nursing experience, with at least some experience within the last year
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- BLS (Basic Life Support) certification issued by the American Heart Association or American Red Cross
Preferred Skills
- Medical/Surgical Telemetry experience on the unit
- Management of dysrhythmias
- Accessing ports
- Insulin administration
- Stroke (CVA) care
- Surgical drains
- Interpretation of ABGs
- Tracheostomy management
- Experience with EPIC electronic health record system
Required Certifications
- BCLS (Basic Cardiac Life Support)
Licensing
- Must hold an active Registered Nurse (RN) license valid in North Carolina.
Compliance & Testing Requirements
- Must pass Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam with a minimum score of 82% within 72 hours of assignment start.
- Background check required within 6 months of start.
- Drug screening (9-panel) within 6 months of start.
- Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 1 year of start; if past positive TB, additional documentation required.
- Required immunizations or titers: Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella. Declinations for measles not accepted.
- Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required during flu season (9/1–10/31).
- Color blindness testing within 1 year.
- Medication safety training certificate required.
- Must complete hospital and unit-specific orientation and competency exams.
- Must complete required facility-specific education modules and compliance training.
Additional Job Details
- No Return to Office (RTO) after booking allowed onsite; excessive call-offs or RTO may lead to cancellation.
- Floating between units is mandatory.
- May be reassigned to different units or centralized office during contract as needed.
- Must submit a passport-style photo for badge creation immediately after signing contract.
- Must complete password setup and login to facility’s learning system (I-Learn) within 24 hours of receiving credentials to avoid start delays.
- Must comply with all hospital policies, confidentiality agreements, and annual mandatory education requirements.

- Documentation and communication: EPIC, SBAR
Orientation & Training
- 24-hour unit orientation plus hospital orientation week one with daily classes.
- Must complete all required education and competency exams prior to or during orientation.
Work Environment
- Night shift, 12-hour shifts, primarily on medical surgical telemetry unit with COVID isolation areas.
- Exposure to multi-level acuity patients including stepdown care.
- Participation in emergency response teams during disasters or catastrophic events.
This position is ideal for Registered Nurses with at least 2 years of experience in medical surgical and telemetry nursing who are comfortable working night shifts, floating between units, and responding to emergency situations. First-time travel nurses are welcome to apply.
