Description

Registered Nurse - MS/Tele

Location: Winston Salem, North Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: 12-hour day shifts (6:45 AM - 7:15 PM), 4 shifts per week (48 hours/week)
Patient Ratio: 1:6


Job Description

  • Care primarily for stroke patients and neurology/neurosurgery diagnoses including epilepsy, traumatic and non-traumatic subdural hematomas.
  • Unit includes a 4-bed Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU); training provided but typically does not affect travelers unless trained.
  • Daily census approximately 42 patients in 43 rooms/beds.
  • Floating required to other Med/Surg and Telemetry areas, including possible COVID care units. Frequent floating may be necessary.
  • Travelers must work every other weekend; if weekend call-offs occur, make-up shifts are required either the same week or at contract end.
  • No Return to Office (RTO) after booking allowed; call-offs or additional RTO may lead to contract cancellation.
  • Navy scrubs required.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in North Carolina
  • Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
  • Minimum 1 year of Med Surg / Telemetry experience within the last year
  • Completion of 2 or more travel nursing assignments
  • BLS certification issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
  • Proficient in IV start
  • Skilled in interpretation of dysrhythmias

Orientation & Training

  • Unit orientation: 36 hours.
  • Must complete medication safety training and other facility-specific education modules prior to or during orientation.
  • Epic system experience preferred; optional Epic test-out available for experienced users.

Systems & Tools

  • PYXIS medication system
  • EPIC electronic health record
  • SBAR communication framework

Compliance & Health Requirements

  • Background checks including local, federal, national criminal, sex offender, and education verification required within specified timeframes.
  • Physical exam within 1 year of start; if past positive TB, physical within 30 days and annual updates required.
  • Fit testing for N95 mask or completion of PAPR training required.
  • Negative TB test or chest x-ray per protocol.
  • Drug screening within 30 days of start (10-panel, negative result required).
  • Immunizations or titers required for: Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, Hepatitis B (with facility-specific declination if applicable).
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required during flu season (9/1 - 10/31).
  • Must complete facility-specific compliance training and confidentiality agreements.

Scheduling & Work Conditions

  • Preferred scheduling model; block scheduling not guaranteed.
  • Floating to other units required based on unit needs.
  • Must work every other weekend; weekend call-offs require make-up shifts.
  • Call-offs or additional RTO may result in contract cancellation.

  • References: 2 professional references within 3 years required for travel nursing.

  • Candidate must provide a passport-style photo on a white background for badge creation.
  • Navy scrubs required on unit.

This position is ideal for experienced Med/Surg travel nurses with strong telemetry and neuro skills who are flexible with floating and weekend work.
