Description

Registered Nurse – MS/Telemetry/Oncology Observation Unit

Location: Columbus, Ohio
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Summary

  • Work on an Observation Unit managing patients with anticipated short stays (up to two midnights) before disposition decisions.
  • Patient population includes those with dehydration, electrolyte abnormalities, nausea/vomiting, chemotherapy/radiation symptom management, acute kidney injury, palliative/pain control, urinary tract infections, syncope, post-procedure overnight stays, hospice transition, PEG tube/line placement, and fever of unknown origin.
  • Occasional floating to Emergency Department to assist with inpatient Med/Surg telemetry patients awaiting transfer. Orientation provided.
  • Patient ratio approximately 1:4 with a charge nurse in assignment.

Shift Details

  • Night shift: 7:00 PM to 7:30 AM (3 shifts per week)
  • 12-hour shifts, 36 hours per week

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Ohio
  • Minimum 2 years of Med Surg / Telemetry nursing experience, including experience within the last year
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Experience with PICC line management
  • Ability to interpret dysrhythmias

Background and Compliance Requirements

  • 7-year criminal background check within 90 days of start, including FBI and BCI fingerprinting (Ohio-specific code 3701.881). Fingerprinting must be current within 1 year of start; new fingerprinting required if break in service exceeds 90 days.
  • Monthly EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG monitoring.
  • Education verification: Graduate of an accredited nursing program (CCNE, ACEN, or NLN CNEA).
  • Employment application and skills checklist required.
  • 2 professional references required; at least one from a manager or formal leadership.
  • Annual review and acknowledgment of dress code, hand hygiene, ethics, and compliance policies.
  • Confidential Fraud, Waste, and Abuse training certificate required prior to start and updated annually.

Health and Immunization Requirements

  • Physical exam within 1 year of start confirming good health and free of contagious disease.
  • Immunizations and titers required:
    • Tdap (adult dose after age 11/12).
    • Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 1 year; TB questionnaire annually.
    • Measles, Mumps, Rubella (2 MMR vaccines or positive titer).
    • Varicella (2 vaccines or positive titer; medical exemptions require documentation).
    • Hepatitis B titer or 3-vaccine series (signed declination acceptable).
  • Seasonal flu vaccine or declination with mask-wearing during flu season (Oct 1 - Mar 31).
  • Negative 10-panel drug screen within 3 months of start (includes amphetamines, barbiturates, benzodiazepines, cannabinoids, cocaine, methadone, methaqualone, opiates, PCP, propoxyphene). New travelers cannot start with pending drug screen.

Uniform and Appearance

  • Scrubs not provided.
  • Required colors: Navy Blue and White.

  • Orientation to the unit and floating areas will be provided.
  • The unit focuses on efficient, high-quality care without premature discharge or admission.
  • The patient care team includes Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) and supervising physicians.

This position offers an opportunity to work in a specialized oncology observation unit with a focus on telemetry and med/surg nursing care in a fast-paced, patient-centered environment.
