Job Opportunity: Oncology Chemo Certified Registered Nurse
Location: Wilmington, North Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Overview
- Work primarily with medical-surgical patients with oncology history on a Med/Surg/Oncology unit.
- Night shift: 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (18:45 - 7:15).
- Patient-to-nurse ratio target: 1:6 (may increase with census).
- Floating required to similar units and alternate inpatient care locations, including inpatient holding in the ED.
- Call required if called off on a prescheduled shift.
- Every other weekend required.
- Must participate in Storm Team and/or Hurricane Team assignments during catastrophic events or disasters.
- Attendance at monthly staff meetings expected.
Required Skills & Experience
- Valid RN license in North Carolina
- Oncology experience with a minimum of 2 years, including experience within the last year
- Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
- Experience in an inpatient setting
- Med/Surg experience
- Experience in charge nurse roles
- Blood product administration
- PICC line management
- Chest tubes (Emerson/Pleur-evac)
Required Certifications
- Oncology Certification (ONC) – must be able to administer chemotherapy if needed.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross.
- Must pass EKG/Dysrhythmia competency testing prior to start (1st attempt within 72 hours, minimum 82% score required).
Preferred Qualifications
- Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) certification.
- Charge nurse experience.
- Oncology Certified Nurse (OCN).
Patient Diagnoses & Procedures
- General medical-surgical diagnoses with oncology patients.
- Administration of chemotherapy/biotherapy via IV, PO, or injection.
- Common diagnoses include AKI, sepsis, cancer, septic shock, pain management, overdose, malignant neoplasms, acute renal failure, encephalopathy, failure to thrive, diabetic foot ulcers, and heparin drips.
Orientation & Uniform
- Unit orientation: 24 hours (2 shifts).
- Scrubs: Navy blue and white.
Unit Systems
- Medication and documentation systems: PYXIS, EPIC, SBAR communication method.
Compliance & Documentation Requirements
- Background check within 6 months prior to start.
- Drug screening (9-panel) within 6 months prior to start.
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year of start; additional documentation required if past positive TB.
- Required immunizations and titers: Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, Hepatitis B, and seasonal flu vaccination or approved exemption.
- Physical exam and medical release forms as per travel agency standards.
- Mandatory completion of facility-specific education modules including medication safety, confidentiality agreement, tobacco-free campus acknowledgment, annual compliance training, and non-Novant health worker orientation (for NC travel candidates).
- Must complete Epic training unless exempted.
- Photo for badge required immediately after signing contract (passport-style, white background, business attire).
- Must complete annual flu vaccination or approved exemption with mask-wearing requirement if exempt.
Additional Notes
- Shifts called out must be made up.
- Contract staff may be reassigned mid-contract to different units as needed.
- Radiation badge not required for this position.
- Candidates must provide proof of logging into the facility’s learning management system (I-Learn) within 24 hours of account setup.
- Must comply with all hospital policies and mandatory education requirements.
