Description

Operating Room Surgical Technologist

Location: State College, Pennsylvania
Employment Type: Contract (13 weeks)
Shift: 8-hour shifts, Monday to Friday (06:30–15:00 and/or 09:00–17:30)
Hours per Week: 36 hours
Call: Call opportunity available but not required


Job Summary

  • Assist in the delivery of patient care in the Operating Room under supervision of the Nursing Supervisor and circulating nurse.
  • Function as a scrub or assist during surgical procedures following AORN Standards of Practice, Principles of Asepsis, and OR policies.
  • Support surgeons by anticipating needs to minimize patient exposure to surgical and anesthetic stress.
  • Maintain sterile fields, perform gowning, gloving, surgical scrubbing, and assist with skin preparation and draping.
  • Handle surgical instruments, equipment, and supplies, including cleaning, sterilizing, and maintenance.
  • Participate in sharps, sponge, and instrument counts.
  • Respond calmly and efficiently to emergency situations following established procedures.
  • Adhere to infection control, safety policies, and standard precautions.
  • Assist anesthesia personnel as needed.
  • Maintain clinical competency and expand knowledge of surgical procedures.
  • Provide patient-centered care respecting privacy, dignity, and diversity.
  • Promote teamwork, responsibility, and ethical behavior within the healthcare team.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience as a Surgical Technologist, including experience within the last year.
  • Certification by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA).
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association.
  • High school diploma or equivalent, or successful completion of an appropriate surgical technology training program in the United States Army, Navy, or Air Force.

  • Knowledge of surgical equipment, supplies, and their specific uses.
  • Dexterity and strength to handle surgical instruments and assist with patient positioning.
  • Ability to maintain aseptic technique and sterile environment.
  • Effective communication and professional attitude with patients, families, and coworkers.
  • Ability to work well under physical or emotional stress.
  • Organizational skills to efficiently set up sterile fields and update surgeon preference lists.
  • Ability to safely operate sterilizing equipment and document processes accurately.

  • Contract length interpreted as 13 weeks.
  • No prior travel experience required.
