Description
Registered Nurse – Step Down Unit
Location: Kalamazoo, Michigan
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Overview
- Immediate backfill with ASAP start
- Night shift: 4 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7:00 PM – 7:30 AM)
- 36 or 48 hour weeks available (indicate preference on application)
- General medical unit caring for Stepdown/PCU and Med-Surg patients, including oncology
- Nurse-to-patient ratio typically 1:4-6, with support staff available if ratios increase
- Floating to other med-surg areas including Acute Unit and Emergency Room may be required
- Weekend work every other weekend; weekends assigned by manager/scheduler
- Self-scheduling available for non-weekend shifts
- Block scheduling may be accommodated upon request
- No return to office (RTO) required for July 4th holiday
- Must be available for the first two weeks of the assignment
Required Experience & Skills
- Minimum 2 years of PCU/Stepdown nursing experience, including experience within the last year
- Experience with oncology/chemotherapy highly preferred
- Skills: administering chemotherapy via IV, starting IVs
- Familiarity with Welch Allyn vital sign towers, Sigma IV pumps, and EPIC documentation system
Required Certifications & Licenses
- Michigan Registered Nurse (RN) License
- Basic Life Support (BLS) – AHA certified
- National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
- Oncology Nursing Certification (ONCC) or Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) certification highly preferred; pending ONS certification accepted
- Chemotherapy certification (ONS/ONCC) may be required
- Additional certifications as applicable: ACLS, PALS, NRP, TNCC, EFM, ENPC, CPI (refer to unit requirements)
Scheduling & Work Conditions
- No call required
- Weekend shifts every other weekend
- Floating to other med-surg units including Acute Unit and Emergency Room
- Charge nurse typically not assigned patients
- Chemotherapy admissions reduce patient assignment ratios
Required Documentation & Compliance
- Government-issued photo ID (Driver’s License or State ID)
- Complete employment application/resume with full 7 years work history, no gaps
- One professional reference from a supervisor or manager (charge nurse references acceptable if direct supervisor)
- Criminal background check within 45 days of start, including lifetime search from age 18
- Monthly EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks
- Michigan LARA fingerprinting required within 45 days of start (process coordinated via compliance team)
- Education verification (copy of highest degree or diploma)
- Physical exam within 1 year of start
- Negative TB test (PPD or Q Gold/T-Spot) within 30 days of start; if positive, chest x-ray and TB questionnaire required
- Annual TB questionnaire update required
- Immunizations or titers required:
- Rubeola (Measles) – 2 vaccines or positive titer
- Mumps – 2 vaccines or positive titer
- Rubella – 2 vaccines or positive titer
- Varicella – 2 vaccines or positive titer
- Hepatitis B – titer, series, or documented declination
- Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap – proof of at least one prior Tdap vaccine
- 10-panel drug screen including marijuana/THC within 30 days of start
- Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/spiritual exemption required for candidates starting after November 1; proof or exemption must be submitted within 48 hours of contract signing
- Completion of medication/pharmacology competency exam and specialty competency exam within 1 year prior to assignment start, with passing score of at least 80%
- Orientation safety manual acknowledgment required
- Code of Conduct and Appearance Standards Policy must be reviewed and acknowledged prior to start
Requirements / Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Michigan
- Minimum 2 years of Progressive Care Unit (PCU) nursing experience, including experience within the last year
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association
- National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
- Proficient in administering chemotherapy via IV
- Skilled in starting IVs
Additional Notes
- Fingerprinting fee ($65.25) paid out of pocket by candidate, reimbursable upon submission of receipt
- Fit testing required on-site for certain clinical roles; appointment must be scheduled and documented
- Any requests for time off after offer acceptance must be discussed with on-site manager
- Prior travel experience is not explicitly required for this position
