Nurse Navigator (Registered Nurse) - Washington, DC
Position Details
- Employment Type: Travel/Contract
- Contract Length: 13 weeks
- Shift: Day shift, Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM (5x8 hours)
- Hours per Week: 40 hours
Job Description
- Provide nursing care and coordination primarily for cancer patients attending radiation treatment.
- Responsibilities include education, skincare/wound care, assessment of radiation toxicity, and addressing social needs.
- Manage care related to ports, central/implanted lines, IV starts (adults), tracheostomy care, and radiation safety precautions.
- Monitor and manage acute conditions such as tumor lysis syndrome, anaphylaxis, extravasation injury, hemorrhage, sepsis, spinal cord compression, neutropenic precautions, altered mental status, constipation/diarrhea, dysphagia, edema, nausea/vomiting, and neuropathy.
- Perform office duties including chart preparation, disability forms, pharmacy calls, and telephone triage.
- Charting is done using Cerner electronic health record system.
- Work closely with physicians, residents, and emergency services as needed.
Required Qualifications
- Valid RN license in District of Columbia.
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
- Minimum 2 years of Hematology/Oncology nursing experience, including experience within the last year.
- Nurse Navigator experience.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association or American Red Cross.
- Experience managing acute oncologic emergencies and complications including Acute Tumor Lysis Syndrome (ATLS), anaphylaxis, extravasation injury, hemorrhage, sepsis, and spinal cord compression.
- Experience with external radiation therapy (teletherapy).
Skills & Competencies
- Care and management of ports and central/implanted lines.
- Starting IVs on adult patients.
- Knowledge and management of acute oncologic emergencies and complications.
- Radiation treatment center procedures and radiation safety.
- Wound care and assessment of radiation toxicity.
- Ability to perform telephone triage and handle pharmacy communications.
- Proficient in electronic charting (Cerner).
Health & Compliance Requirements
- Annual physical exam confirming ability to work without accommodations and free from communicable disease.
- Negative TB test (PPD, Quantiferon, or T-spot) within 1 year; if history of TB, additional documentation required.
- Drug screen within 90 days of start (excluding marijuana).
- Required immunizations or proof of immunity: MMR (measles, mumps, rubella), Varicella, Hepatitis B, Tdap (within 10 years preferred).
- Annual flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption.
- N95 fit test within 9 months of start and updated annually (client may complete on-site if needed).
Background & Documentation
- Criminal background check within 90 days including multi-state and federal searches.
- Education verification for highest degree.
- Employment history covering 7 years with no gaps.
- Two positive supervisory references supporting at least 2 years of experience within the last 3 years.
- I9/E-Verify attestation required prior to start.
- Completion of facility-specific modules and safety training prior to start.
This position is ideal for experienced RNs with oncology or nurse navigator/coordinator experience who are comfortable managing complex cancer patient care in a radiation treatment setting and have prior travel nursing experience.
