Certified Surgical First Assistant - Travel/Contract
Location: Clinton, Maryland
Specialty: Surgical Services
Shift: Day (4x10 hours), 7:00 AM – 5:30 PM
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Description
- Assist in the operating room as a first assist during surgical procedures.
- Required experience in neurosurgery and plastics.
- Call requirements: 4-6 weekday calls and 3-5 weekend days in a six-week period.
- Holiday coverage as needed.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum 2 years of experience as a First Assist Technician, including experience within the last year.
- Completion of at least one travel assignment as a First Assist Technician.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
- National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) certification.
Schedule & Work Hours
- 4 days per week, 10 hours per day (40 hours/week).
- Shift hours: 7:00 AM to 5:30 PM.
Compliance & Background Requirements
- Criminal background check within 90 days of start, covering all locations lived/worked/schooled in the past 7 years.
- Monthly EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks prior to and during employment.
- Education verification for highest degree required by the position.
- Drug screen within 90 days of start (excluding marijuana), including multiple substances.
- I9/E-Verify attestation required for all candidates.
- Annual physical exam confirming ability to perform work without accommodations and free from communicable disease.
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year; annual TB questionnaire required.
- Immunization documentation required for:
- Tdap (within 10 years preferred)
- Measles, Mumps, Rubella (2 MMR vaccines or positive titer)
- Varicella (2 vaccines or positive titer)
- Hepatitis B (titer, series, or signed declination)
- Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required during flu season.
Competency & Training Requirements
- Medication/Pharmacology competency exam within 3 years, minimum 80% score.
- Color blindness test (online or in-person).
- Competency exam within 3 years, minimum 80% score.
- Annual orientation safety manual acknowledgement.
- Facility-specific modules (SITELS) must be completed prior to start date.
Additional Requirements
- Valid driver’s license required if driving on behalf of the employer is an essential job function.
- Clear, professional photo for badge issuance.
- Sterile Processing Tech certification (CBSPD) required if applicable.
- N95 fit test within 9 months of start and updated annually (not required for Sterile Processing Tech).

- Locals within 60 miles may be considered at a different rate (not disclosed here).
