Description

Registered Nurse - Travel/Contract

Location: Winston Salem, North Carolina
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: 12-hour nights (typically 3 shifts per week, 18:45 - 7:15)
Hours per Week: 36 (option for 48 hours available)


Job Description

  • Fast-paced unit caring for orthopedic, neuro spine, med-surg, and post-surgical patients
  • Average daily census: 37 patients in 39 beds
  • Patient population includes orthopedic and spine patients requiring attentive pain management
  • Unit accepts first-time travelers with EPIC experience
  • Float requirement: Must float to other med-surg units as needed based on census
  • Weekend requirement: Every other weekend; missed weekend shifts must be made up on a weekend
  • Staffing ratios: Typically 5-6 patients per nurse; can flex to 7:1 only in extreme cases
  • Block scheduling options available (e.g., Fri/Sat/Sun or Sat/Sun/Mon)
  • No approval for holiday time off (RTO)
  • RTO after booking is not allowed and cannot be worked out onsite; excessive call-offs or RTO may lead to cancellation

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in North Carolina
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Minimum 2 years of Med Surg and Telemetry nursing experience, with at least 1 year of recent Med Surg/Telemetry experience
  • Orthopedics experience, including ortho work experience
  • Experience with EPIC electronic health record system
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification

Preferred Qualifications

  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) certification
  • Charge nurse experience
  • Level I trauma experience

Compliance and Onboarding Requirements

  • Background checks including local, federal, and national criminal databases, education verification, and sex offender search
  • Physical exam within 1 year of start; if past positive TB, physical within 30 days and annual updates required
  • Fit testing for N95 mask or completion of PAPR training (not required for non-clinical)
  • Negative TB test or chest x-ray per facility policy
  • Drug screening within 30 days of start (10-panel, negative result required)
  • Immunizations or titers required for:
    • Rubeola (Measles)
    • Mumps
    • Rubella
    • Varicella
    • Hepatitis B (or facility-specific declination form if titer negative/equivocal)
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required during flu season (9/1 - 10/31)
  • Completion of facility-specific education modules including medication safety, confidentiality agreement, tobacco-free campus acknowledgement, and annual compliance training
  • Must complete Non-Novant Health Worker Clinical Education Checklist (for North Carolina travel candidates)
  • Photo for badge required immediately after signing contract (passport style, white background, business attire)
  • Must complete competency exams including medication test/pharmacology and dysrhythmia/EKG exam (minimum 82% score required)
  • References: 2 professional references within 3 years (not required by facility but required by agency)
  • Employment application must be uploaded to agency system

Additional Notes

  • Candidates must complete all required documentation and training prior to start to avoid delays
  • Floating to other med-surg units is mandatory to meet staffing needs
  • No holiday time off allowed during contract
  • Unit is fast-paced and requires strong clinical skills, especially in orthopedic nursing and telemetry monitoring
