Neuro ICU Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Job - Charlotte, North Carolina
Job Summary
- Specialty: Registered Nurse (Neuro ICU)
- Location: Charlotte, NC
- Employment Type: Travel/Contract
- Contract Length: 13 weeks
- Shift: Night shift, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (18:45 - 07:15)
- Hours per week: 36
- Patient Population: Comprehensive Stroke Center with high volume of stroke patients (ischemic, hemorrhagic, SAH), SDH, craniotomies, carotid stents/endarterectomies, aneurysm coiling/clipping, seizures, myasthenia gravis, and post-neurosurgery care.
- Nurse-to-patient ratio: Typically 2:1, may flex to 3:1 during high census (nurse must be comfortable with this).
- Average daily census: 11-12 patients
- Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
- Float Requirement: Yes
- Call Requirement: None
- Orientation: 24 hours (2 days or 2 nights)
- Scrubs: Navy blue & white
Required Qualifications
- Valid RN license in North Carolina
- Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
- Minimum 2 years of ICU (Intensive Care Unit) experience, including experience within the last year
- One completed travel assignment
- Certifications: ACLS, BLS issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross, NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS)
- Skills and experience in:
- Management of dysrhythmias
- Blood product administration
- Central line care/management
- Continuous IV sedation
- External ventricular drains (EVD) and ICP monitoring
- Post-neurosurgery management
- Arterial line management
- Lumbar drain experience
Preferred Qualifications
- Arterial line management experience
Patient Care Environment & Equipment
- Special equipment used: EVD, Lumbar Drains, Camino (ICP monitoring), LICOX, NICOM, Arctic Sun
- Unit systems: Pyxis, EPIC, SBAR communication
Compliance & Screening Requirements
- Background checks including local county, federal court, national criminal database, DOJ sex offender search, and education verification for highest degree earned
- Drug screening: Negative 10-panel drug screen within 30 days of start
- Physical exam within 1 year of start (or within 30 days if past positive TB)
- Fit testing for N95 mask or completion of PAPR training (not required for non-clinical)
- TB screening: Negative PPD, Qgold, or Tspot within 1 year; if positive, clear chest x-ray within 5 years and physician-signed TB questionnaire within 30 days of start
- Immunizations/Titers required or boosters if negative/equivocal for:
- Rubeola (Measles)
- Mumps
- Rubella
- Varicella
- Hepatitis B (facility-specific declination form required if titer negative/equivocal)
- Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required during flu season (9/1 - 10/31 deadline)
- Must complete annual compliance training and medication safety training prior to start
- Must complete facility-specific education modules and orientation checklists as required
Documentation & Onboarding
- Employment application and skills checklist as applicable
- References: 2 professional references within 3 years (not required for non-clinical)
- Photo for badge: Passport-style photo on white background, business attire, no head coverings except glasses; must be submitted immediately after signing contract
- Confidentiality agreement, tobacco-free campus acknowledgement, hospital policies, and other facility-specific documents required prior to start
- Must complete password registration and login to facility’s learning system (I-Learn) within 24 hours of receiving credentials
Additional Notes
- No Return to Office (RTO) after booking allowed; call-offs or additional RTO may result in cancellation or Do Not Rehire status
- Unit accepts 13-week contracts
- Strong neuro ICU experience is mandatory; candidates without this should not be submitted
- Candidate must be comfortable with flexible nurse-to-patient ratios up to 3:1 during high census
- Orientation and onboarding require timely completion of multiple compliance and competency exams including EKG/dysrhythmia testing
This position is ideal for experienced Neuro ICU RNs with strong critical care skills and prior travel experience seeking a night shift travel assignment in a comprehensive stroke center environment.
