Description
Registered Nurse (MS/Tele - Orthopedics) - Columbia, South Carolina
Job Type
- Travel/Contract position
- Contract length: 13 weeks
- Shift: Night shift, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7:00 PM to 7:30 AM)
- Weekend requirement: Every other weekend, 6 weekend shifts total
- Floating required as needed to other units or campuses where qualified
Unit Details
- Adult 26-bed orthopedic spine unit specializing in spinal surgeries such as laminectomies, spinal fusions, and discectomies
- Integrated pain management, physical therapy, and mobility support provided
- Patient diagnoses include Med/Surg, Telemetry, cardiac issues, low-risk ACS, TIAs, diabetes, hypertension, COPD, dehydration, chest pain, DVT, and PE
- Special procedures: bedside lumbar puncture, post cardiac catheterization (radial/femoral), post-surgical care, post renal biopsy, CT Angio, and Heparin drips
- Nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:5-6
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in South Carolina
- Minimum 1 year of telemetry nursing experience within the last year
- Orthopedic nursing experience
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Experience with Epic electronic health record system
- Certifications required:
- Basic Life Support (BLS) issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
- National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS)
Scheduling and Policies
- All scheduling requests (RTO, block, special) must be submitted with application and are subject to facility approval
- Facility may call off 1 shift per 2 weeks
- First-time travelers accepted
- Local candidates accepted within radius rule criteria
Compliance and Documentation Requirements
- Driver’s license/state ID required for computer access and must be carried on duty
- Background check: 7-year history within 12 months of start, including alias and multi-state/county searches
- Federal and international background checks as applicable
- EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 30 days of start and every 30 days thereafter
- Fingerprinting required if applicable (e.g., residency requirements)
- Education verification of highest level required (diplomas not accepted as placeholders)
- Primary source verification of nursing license required within 30 days of start
- NURSYS verification required showing authorization to work in South Carolina
- Drug screening: 5-panel drug test within 1 year of start, updated annually
- Physical exam within 1 year attesting ability to meet physical demands
- Respirator fit test completed onsite during orientation (N95 masks commonly used)
- Immunizations and health documents required:
- Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (if working/floating in high-risk areas)
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 90 days of start
- Annual TB questionnaire
- Measles, Mumps, Rubella (positive titer or 2 vaccines)
- Hepatitis B vaccination series, positive titer, or signed declination
- Varicella (positive titer or 2 vaccines)
- Seasonal flu vaccine or approved exemption (not required for remote workers)
- Online orientation modules must be completed within 72 hours of assignment (not required for prebook candidates)
- Pre-assignment testing (medication and arrhythmia tests) required within 72 hours of receiving login; two attempts allowed
- Badge photo required prior to start (passport-style, plain background, no alterations)
- Floating policy acknowledgment required annually
Additional Notes
- Pass/fail testing for medication and EKG/arrhythmia required for this unit
- Candidates must pass competency exams and annual core training (Parts I, II, III) including OSHA, TJC National Patient Safety Goals, and age-specific care
- Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) or Management of Assaultive Behavior (MAB) certification may be required depending on unit specifics
- Prior travel experience is not required; first-time travelers are accepted
This position offers an opportunity to work in a specialized orthopedic spine unit with a diverse patient population and requires strong clinical skills in orthopedics and telemetry nursing. Compliance with extensive credentialing, testing, and immunization requirements is mandatory.
