Job Opportunity: Respiratory Therapist - NICU (Travel/Contract)
Location: Richmond, Virginia
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Nights (3 shifts per week, 12 hours each, 7:00 PM – 7:00 AM)
Unit: Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU)
First-Time Travelers: Accepted
Job Summary
- Provide respiratory therapy services in a Pediatric Intensive Care Unit setting.
- Work night shifts in a high-acuity environment.
- Facility is a large, well-recognized medical center with advanced technology and a strong reputation for infection prevention.
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Respiratory Therapist license in Virginia
- Minimum 1 year of Respiratory Therapist experience, including experience within the last year
Compliance and Background Requirements
- Government-issued photo ID must be carried during hours of service.
- Criminal background check within 60 days of start, including:
- All states lived/worked in past 7 years
- State of permanent residence
- Virginia Statewide Repository Search
- Nationwide FACIS Level 3
- Sex Offender Registry
- Education verification
- EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 30 days of start.
- Virginia State Police fingerprint-based national criminal background check required for all Pediatrics units and NICU. Results can pend if proof of submission is on file.
- Central Registry Search (CPS) required within 48 hours of contract signing for Pediatrics and NICU units; candidates may start with results pending if submission proof is on file.
- Education verification required; degree or certification from an accredited program.
Health and Safety Requirements
- Physical exam within 1 year confirming ability to meet physical demands.
- Immunizations and titers required:
- Tdap vaccine or declination
- Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella titers with booster if low titer
- Hepatitis B titer, vaccine series, or declination
- TB testing: Q-gold/T-spot within 30 days of start OR two PPDs (one within 1 year, one within 30 days). Chest X-ray required within 6 months if PPD positive.
- Annual TB questionnaire required regardless of TB status.
- Drug screening within 60 days of start; 9-panel minimum (marijuana not required). Instant drug screens not accepted.
- Seasonal flu vaccination or approved exemption required for the 2025-26 season (no declinations accepted).
Orientation and Competency
- Orientation includes:
- Pharmacology exam
- Point of Care Testing
- Airborne Precaution Mask Fitting
- Basic Knowledge Assessment Tool (BKAT) for ICU and step-down units
- Completion of assigned learning modules (~6 hours) during orientation week required.
- Competency exams required as applicable.
- Abuse reporting competency covering physical/sexual abuse, domestic violence, and neglect/exploitation of vulnerable adults required.
- Medication/pharmacology competency exam required for RNs and LVNs/LPNs (not applicable for RRTs).
- Color blindness testing required.
Documentation and Application
- Complete application/resume required.
- Two professional references required.
- Skills checklist must be updated annually.
- Confidentiality agreement required prior to start (specific to some units).
Additional Notes
- Candidates must bring a mask (cloth acceptable), non-wireless headphones, and a laptop or cell phone to orientation (notify if unable to bring).
- Fingerprinting results take approximately 21 business days; candidates must follow detailed submission instructions and provide proof of submission before starting.
- No onsite certification renewals; all certifications must be current at contract start. Certifications expiring within 1 month of start are not accepted.
