Unit Information

• Cardiovascular Operating Room (CVOR) with 2 open heart surgical suites
• Staffing varies by volume: typically 2 RNs and 2 Techs on day shift; night shift is on-call
• Patient ratio: 2:1
• Equipment: Open heart instrumentation and supplies
• Call requirement: On-call approximately every other day and every other weekend
• May provide lunch relief in other service lines including Vascular, Robotics, General Surgery, Orthopedics, Neuro/Spine, Urology, Podiatry, Thoracic Surgery, and Plastic Surgery

Typical Procedures

• Coronary Artery Bypass Graft (CABG)
• Mitral Valve Replacement (MVR)
• Aortic Valve Replacement (AVR)
• Pacemaker implantation
• Laser lead extractions
• Some endovascular procedures
• Standby for Thoracic Endovascular Aortic Repair (TVAR) and mitral clips
• Preference for experience in minimally invasive cardiac procedures

Required Qualifications

• Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) certification
• Minimum 2 years of experience as a Cardiovascular Operating Room (CVOR) Technologist, including experience within the last year
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
• Ability to scrub assist in open heart cases
• De-escalation skills in a healthcare setting
• Completion of an assessment to evaluate skills and knowledge for the Surgical Technologist role or training/knowledge regarding the handling of hazardous drugs as per USP 800 guidelines

Additional Information

• The Cardiovascular Surgical Technologist assists the surgeon before, during, and after surgery under RN supervision according to clinical standards of care
• Scrubs are provided by the facility (scrub color specific to OR/CVOR)
• Must be adaptable to a fast-paced unit and able to function independently
• On-call responsibilities are mandatory
